Poem on white background:

Things that will get me through February
(after Laura Jean Henebry)

camellias in bloom against monochromatic gray sky / the rhythmic clanging of brass coupled with my inability to dance / king cake / gleaming purple, green, and gold / extra minutes of daylight / bringing sanity to my restless mind / books / so many books / turning 38 / embracing the privilege of aging rather than clinging to the fear / this liminal space between winter and southern “spring” / scheduled mental health days / bedtime stories / sipping wine / next to you

A haiku in black text centered on a white background that says:

let it be this cold.
the world lacks warmth anyway—
just turn on the news.

It’s #haikuhumpday - and not a cheery one.

A poem about writing.

HOW TO WRITE A POEM WHEN YOU HAVE NO WORDS (after Joy Harjo)

Panic.
Tell yourself: I’ll never write again.
Reprimand yourself for being dramatic.
Put on some coffee. Or tea if that’s your thing.
Breathe.
Play some music.
The sad kind. The songs that make you weep.
The songs with lyrics you wish you’d written.
Scroll instagram.
Toss phone across room—you know better.
(Imposter syndrome: what a bitch.)
Take a walk.
Notice something. Anything.
The gray of the sky.
The wildflower peeking through the sidewalk.
The ache in your bones. In your soul.
Enter your home, slightly different than before.
Remind yourself: there are no absolutes.
Then write…something.
Anything.
Press pen to paper, finger to key
And let the weight of the world flow freely.
