On #ThisDayInHistory in 2005, #MahmoudAbbas won the election to replace #YasserArafat as President of the #StateOfPalestine & #PalestinianAuthority with 67% of votes cast. He had only a four-year term, but no elections have been held since then and he remains illegally in office.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 2002, Israel seized a small cargo ship, #MVKarineA, that was apparently purchased by members of the #PalestinianAuthority and loaded with 50 tons of #Iranian weapons in #Yemen. #Fatah and #YasserArafat denied knowledge and involvement with the scheme.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 2004, #YasserArafat, long-time head of the #PLO, died in a suburb of Paris. The #Palestinian leader had fallen ill in October and was taken to France for medical care. In the years prior he was a virtual prisoner in #Ramallah due to the #SecondIntifada.
