AI Pioneer Announces Non-Profit To Develop 'Honest' AI Yoshua Bengio, a pioneer in AI and Turing Award winner, has launched a $30 million non-profit organization called LawZero, which aims to design safe AI systems. Bengio will be the president of LawZero, is developing a system called Scientist AI, which will act as a guard against AI agents that show deceptive or self-preserving behavior. The current AI agents are described as "actors" seeking to imitate humans, whereas Scientist AI will be more like a "psychologist" that can understand and predict bad behavior. Bengio's goal is to create AIs that are honest and do not have self-goals, but rather are pure knowledge machines. Unlike current AI tools, Scientist AI will not give definitive answers but instead provide probabilities of whether an answer is correct, showing a sense of humility. The system will flag potentially harmful behavior by an autonomous system by predicting the probability of harm and blocking actions if the probability is above a certain threshold. Bengio aims to demonstrate the methodology to convince donors, governments, or AI labs to provide resources to develop the guardrail AI at a large scale. The guardrail AI needs to be at least as smart as the AI agent it is trying to monitor and control.
