"In the morning, Yugiri awakes to the sound of crows braying in the rafters of the thatched roof above her head. They take off, swooping through the large open window in a flurry of inky black feathers as she sits up, her robes plastered to her back and her hair damp with sweat. She had agreed, after much convincing from her new self-appointed doctor, to rest at the shrine until her leg healed — however Yugiri didn’t intend to stay long. She made shallow promises and thought very little of her own wellbeing — that was her way. To put her duty before herself was the mark of an exemplary soldier, she wouldn’t dare stray from that.
She had a curious dream. The girl was in it, the one who called herself Madoka and tended to the grounds around the shrine. She looked exactly the same as when Yugiri first saw her — hair twisted delicately around the apple blossom branch, her face round and smiling — but she was dressed for battle in flowing robes and leather armour that protected her neck, arms and chest. Her thighboots were flecked with mud and blood, as was the coat of her trusted steed, a pale white horse with a horn of sparkling ivory stained with a dark shade of red. The girl mounted her steed, and Yugiri rode atop her own in stride, the two falling into formation within a larger contingent of soldiers on either of their flanks, each brandishing their weapon of choice — Yugiri, her twin blades, and Madoka, a conjurer’s cane made of polished ebony wood."
