Marine shells from common winkle & European flat oyster (native to Ireland coastal waters) from a Later Medieval Irish archaeology site, I worked on recently.
We can tell a lot about the site and fishing/coastal foraging from recording info from marine shells with edible shellfish. 1/2 🏺 #zooarch

Weak jaw muscles or painful lesions in the mouth can cause this. Sharp borders can cause injury to the cheek &make feeding difficult leading to imperfect grinding of food. Ultimately leads to general loss of condition of the animal. Happens in modern cattle today as well.
