A graph showing a distribution of marathon finishing times. X axis is from 2 to 7 hours and the Y axis from o to 100 thousand finishers. The distribution is broadly normal, except for a sharp decrease at 4 hours.
Text above says: The distribution of marathon finishing times is a good reminder that setting goals and benchmarks can be an incredibly powerful tool to reach your goals
I like interesting graphs…and this is one of them:

Still not finished, but progress. All pieces are done, but it needs more sanding, gluing the frame together, more sanding: 80, 120, 180, 240, 320, and a finish with linseed oil. Soon ..

„The only remaining way to mitigate this situation is to reduce the number of applications.“
They’ve tried nothing and are all out of ideas? Whether this is good or bad, it is unjustified. There is no impact analysis, no engagement with research on funding procedures. Government by vibes

I do not understand this talk about elife's "new" publishing model. I submitted sth and got the same desk-rejection bs phrases of "not of sufficient interest for broad readership .. maybe send to more specialist journal" which just translates to 'not sexy enough for us'. Nothing new.

In the future I will only review for journals which give me the improved options for publishing recommendations:

Professor Dave wants scientists to be more blunt when calling out grifters, liars and cranks.

Degradation of fish food webs in the Anthropocene
The decrease in body size driven by the selective species turnover is widely altering fish food web topology and function.
New paper out examining fish food web degradation in the Anthropocene. We show the structure of aquatic food webs are changing-- even when species richness doesn’t. These signals are strongly associated with decreases in body size within fish communities. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... 🌐🐠🐡🦈🐟

Therefore I would be more intereted in how many of the screening is done and how many meta analyses are written by people who are not experts in the field.

Quality screening with tick-lists will only produce tokenistic compliance but not quality. The worrying thing about them: screening can be done by people with no understanding of the research topic (or it will be automated and made by machines).

Let's talk about the quality screening. Does your checklist still include a question about the presence of a COI statement? If yes, then it will be biased. (It only tells you in which year the publisher made it a mandatory field in the online submission system). Same with many other check-boxes.

One on left is a black dog and above it the words “Reality”. Below it is “I chased a squirrel”
One the right is a black dog and above it says “LinkedIn”. Below it says,
Proud to announce that I effectively executed a rapid-response squirrel displacement strategy to mitigate potential yard intrusions.
Humbled by the unwavering support of my family and local stakeholders.
This experience reinforced the importance of vigilance, ownership, and continuous improvement.
Looking forward to scaling this impact in future engagements.

Landmark deal should raise questions about publisher’s practices on peer review, citations and special issues, say research sleuths
Plus, MDPI/Frontiers spend big money to convince governments they're not just legit, but leaders. Frontiers just sponsored WEF Davos, MDPI signed a deal with German national science agency.

I once wrote as coi: "getting this paper published in a high profile journal will boost my chances of securig a faculty position and hence my future financial situation". Journal refused to print that -said that's not their definition of coi.

but I admit: to make sure all pieces are really the same size and will gide along smoothly, the circular sander is helpful.
