Are civil dialogue programs just a tool of the right to influence the overton window? Based on the aims of grant-makers, not so much, according to reporting from my fabulous colleague, @franciediep.bsky.social

At a time when resources have become scarce and questions about the value of college run rampant, elective courses can be portrayed as a symbol of the sectorβs irrelevance, and as needlessly slowing students down
The @postopinions.bsky.social piece on students finishing online degrees in a matter of weeks is great.
Our own @bradwolverton.bsky.social uncovered something similar in 2012, showing how student athletes were using such methods to evade NCAA eligibility rules:

There are lots of radical ideas in the 151 pages of regulations the Department of Education is proposing. This one involves a fundamental misunderstanding or misrepresentation of how academic life works. 𧡠(1/7)

Shallow dive on the way the ED dept is trying to regulate programmatic accreditation
to make it on the sunday talk shows?
President Trump wants to add his own triumphal arch to the pantheon of monuments honoring American greatness, but this one would be a break from American traditions.
In my free newsletter, I explain what the implications of that change could be. danvock.substack.com/p/monumental...
#negreg The first week is over, except for an afternoon caucus among several members - there have been a number of these sidebars meant to allow groups to talk strategy and form counterproposals for the dept to consider.
Some of the low-hanging fruit has been harvested, but a lot of tensions remain
The members of the Triad trying to figure out who should act first
#negreg Duffy, from Ohio, now advocating for use of loan repayments as an accountability measure accreditors should consider.. on the same day ED releases an NPRM that replaces a previous accountability plan that used earnings/debt ratio for gainful employment....
#negreg Quote of the week from Michale McComis, talking about details of student outcome requirements:
"I'm gonna load up the bus and take us to "wonky McWonk town for a minute"
#negreg - state officials, like Mike Duffy of Ohio, say accreditors should hold colleges accountable for poor outcomes. That may be a role for accreditors, but STATES authorize colleges to grant degrees, and they could remove that authorization for those colleges.
5/ but I wonder, how state officials in TX would feel if an accreditor started inquiring about firing of faculty over comments about Charlie Kirk or cancelling a class on Plato?
Conservative states, in particular, have pushed hard to limit accreditor input
#negreg Importantly, I've been spelling Jennifer Blum's name with an 'e' on the end all week, because (no good excuse, so my apologies)
4/ in essence, dept wants accreditors to require colleges to have a policy and look at whether that policy is applied "consistently"
