Together with Karen Fleetwood, Laëtitia translated Gaëlle Bélem’s debut novel There’s a Monster Behind the Door, which was longlisted for the 2025 International Booker Prize, shortlisted for the 2025 Scott-Moncrieff Translation Prize and won the 2025 UK/Ireland Republic of Consciousness Prize.
In this event, she will be joined by one of her translators Laëtitia Saint-Loubert, literary translator specializing in Caribbean and Indian Ocean literature.
Gaëlle Bélem has been awarded the Grand prix du roman métis, the Société des gens de lettres André-Dubreuil prize for a first novel and has been longlisted for the International Booker Prize.

As Darafeya’s voice dominates the novel with her no-holds-barred accounts, her granddaughter Ryna, prisoner of these memories of relentless violence, tries to make her peace with them and remake a life for herself in this troubled place.
Managing to survive several brutal regimes, she and her grandmother, one-eyed Maryanka, known as the ‘whisperers’, are feared and respected by their neighbours for their powers of healing and witchcraft.
Ryna has come home from abroad to the wake of her granny Darafeya in Nauhalnye, a village in the drained marshlands near Lipen, in a remote corner of Belarus. That night, as Ryna sits alone with the coffin, Darafeya, who lived to be a hundred, tells one final story.
A novel from author Eva Vezhnavets, and translated from the original Belarusian by Ella and Jim Dingley, ‘What Now, Mr Wolf?’ weaves a dark, caustic tapestry of unforgettable oral testimony that pays homage to the women of Belarus amid the darkest chapters of recent European history.
