New research shows how far into the blue abyss Whale Sharks can dive.
In this recent study co-authored by Re:wild's Mark Erdmann, researchers recorded a Whale Shark diving to depths between 1,978 and 2,527 meters, extending science's known limit for the species.

The Slender-billed Curlew once crossed continents. Now, only traces remain. Not one moment—but many: habitat destruction, drained wetlands, hunting.
A “double extinction”—of species, and of knowledge.

A reminder why efforts like the Search for Lost Birds matter.
Mark Erdmann, Shark Conservation director at Re:wild, shares how efforts like ReShark are working to bring sharks back, restoring balance to marine ecosystems, not only protecting what remains.

💦🐸 Romeo changed the fate of his species. Once thought alone, his story helped spark global action — leading to rediscoveries and a newly found, breeding wild population in Carrasco National Park. Romeo has now died, but his legacy lives on.
“No one ever dreamed mantas would go this deep,” says Mark Erdmann of @rewild. New research shows Oceanic manta rays dive ~1,250m (4,000+ ft) into the midnight zone to navigate, not hunt. Protecting all ocean depths matters.

We've lost a tiny legend.
The Christmas Island Shrew, Australia’s only native shrew & one of Re:wild’s most wanted lost small mammals, has been declared Extinct. The shrew had only been documented 4 times during the past 120 years.

🌍 Africa has 3,000+ freshwater fish species, most found nowhere else on Earth.
But nearly 1 in 4 are now threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, overfishing, invasive species & climate change.
🐟 Freshwater fishes are the lifeblood of Africa’s rivers, lakes & wetlands—vital for food, culture & ecosystems. But they’re vanishing fast.

Barbados has lost many native species to habitat destruction + invasive species.
Re:wild works with local partners to reverse that trend — and protect these living threads of biodiversity before they vanish forever. 🌱

Found under a rock in central Barbados by @rewild’s Justin Springer + Connor Blades of the Barbados Ministry of Environment, this tiny snake is rare, cryptic, and now — finally — back in the spotlight.
🗣️ “I smell a threadsnake,” Springer joked... then found one. 👀
🐍 The world’s smallest snake — just 3–4 inches long — has been rediscovered in Barbados after being lost to science for nearly 20 years! 📏🇧🇧
It’s called the Barbados Threadsnake, and it had only been seen a handful of times before.

(5/7)Nearly 1 million people depend on the freshwater in the Okavango River Basin and the basin is their only source of water.
(4/7)Meanwhile, in southern Africa’s Okavango River Basin, Canadian company ReconAfrica is exploring for oil and gas. The company stored potentially toxic wastewater from one of its exploratory wells in unlined drill pits.
(3/7)But scientists are concerned that even if the toxic waste is moved deep underground, it could still contaminate surface water through cracks and fissures in rocks.
