🐟 Freshwater fishes are the lifeblood of Africa’s rivers, lakes & wetlands—vital for food, culture & ecosystems. But they’re vanishing fast.
A new @wwfafrica.bsky.social report shows dazzling biodiversity under threat. 👉 africa.panda.org/our_work/pub...

There were many incredible clouds of #fish fry in the shallower water along the vegetated edges of the Cut-Off Channel at Wretton on the last day of May, including, I guess, Roach (top 2), Bleak (slim, silvery, pale eye) & Perch (stripey, humpy backed). #freshwaterfishes #teamfish #fishsky 9/21
These are almost the only Minnows I saw, running with a shoal of Bleak.
The few Rudd were the biggest fish apart from Pike. Roach with their orangey eye were the most abundant fish in the Cut-Off Channel at Wretton.

Digging through old #coregonids literature in the library is always exciting ! Fascinating to see the extant of work done on these fishes over the years.

As I lay in wait in River Great Stour (water 13.3°C, air 15.5) for the Canterbury Beavers to emerge, was cloaked in Minnows, suppose attracted to anything I might dislodge. Also plenty of Gudgeon & small Dace, a Pike hanging out nearby. #chalkstreams #Kent #freshwaterfishes 5/7
Common Gudgeon & European Minnows both abundant in the River Lark downstream of Judes Ferry, West Row. Quite a few European Perch too. Also some fine Chabot Bullheads, here with a caddisfly larvae. #freshwaterfishes #freshwaterfish #WestSuffolk #Chalkstreams #Mildenhall 9/10
The 850 m of the River Lark downstream from Judes Ferry, West Row is dominated by Roach, Dace & Minnows. At the top end these fine Perch preside. Saw only 1 small Pike, too fast for my camera. #MySwim #Chalkstreams #WestSuffolk #Freshwaterfishes #RiverLark #Mildenhall 1/10
In the River Sapiston aka Black Bourn at Ixworth, plenty of Threespine Sticklebacks, some males coming into breeding condition, Minnows, many males in full breeding regalia & Chabot Bullheads, mainly small ones. Also a few Perch. #freshwaterfishes #freshwaterfish #WestSuffolk 4/9
Fantastic pool of dozens of fish under bridge at Ixworth: especially medium size Dace, also Chub, a shoal of large Gudgeon underneath & a few Rudd. Thrilling being in the midst of them as they circle around. (But light too low for photos) #Freshwaterfishes #WestSuffolk

Found dead Perch in the Cut-off Channel at Lakenheath & also saw 1 with dark pigment on head who is perhaps diseased? Below are some healthy ones hanging about in the fringing reeds, now showing spears of new growth

I met a couple of Pike in the River Thet by Cloverfield Water Meadows, one about 45cm & a little jack Pike.
Plenty of Perch including a couple of huge ones.
And of course Three-spined Sticklebacks.

In the River Thet past Cloverfield, among the Roach, there are a few small Dace & more Chub, including some good sized ones in their lairs under the trees, the youngsters tending to be high in the water column with their distinctive dark tails.

Besides Bitterlings & Roach, Perch were the next most abundant fish at the mouth of the River Wissey where it joins the Great Ouse. Also saw one small Common Bream.

The huge numbers of Silver Bream in the River Wissey were mainly hanging out in shoals of the even more numerous Roach, several of which seemed to be injured or diseased. Also a few Chub and Perch.

In the River Ivel mill pool at Langford, amongst the inquisitive teeming Minnows and quite a lot of Gudgeon, a few young Roach.

Delighted to see some fish still active in the freezing River Lark today - some stonking Perch (though 1 had a sore on its back), as well as shoals of Roach & Minnows.

At #HambrookMarshes railway bridge, a Marsh Frog calling from a Watercress bed lured me back into the placid waters of the Great Stour chalk stream, with abundant Gudgeon as well as Minnows & other young fish. #Chalkstreams #Kent #Gudgeon #Minnows #freshwaterfishes #stour

In one pool in the upper River Wissey, several Perch shared the waters with the teeming Brown Trout, sunlight spangling down through the large tree that overhung the favoured pool.

In the Little Ouse this afternoon, upstream of Brandon, a continuous stream of Minnows, intermittent roving herds of Gudgeon & a few Roach. The fish are often clustered round fallen or overhanging trees.

In the lovely Little Ouse saw a couple of huge 18 inch Perch & under a fallen willow, 3 monster Chub each a good yard long. Huge numbers of smaller Chub too, more abundant than Roach on this stretch.

Also in the Little Ouse upstream of Brandon saw a Roach looking like it has dropsy? And some very chunky looking large Roach that I wondered if are hybrids with Chub? Quite a few small Chub too. #roach #chalkstreams #littleouse #breckland #norfolk #Suffolk #freshwaterfishes

There are some beautiful, good-sized Perch, some hanging around in small gangs, in the River Little Ouse upstream of Brandon.

In the River Brett, besides Perch, big shoals of fish fry - Roach?
Could this be a Chub fry among the young Three-spined Sticklebacks in the shallows?

Visibility downstream of Thetford to weir too poor to see many fish apart from minnows, roach & as ever, a Pike at River Thet confluence.
Downstream of weir a handsome Bullhead & his home.
Also Gudgeon & a few young Dace with the Minnows. #freshwaterfishes #chalkstreams

Privilege to be in relaxed physical contact with such beautiful creatures as Minnows in River Little Ouse. A delight apparently to brighten their day. Lucky my gloves are part fingerless!

Plenty of good homes for Bullheads in the River Little Ouse at Thetford. I marvel at how they vary in colour.
A large Pike cruised the shallows downstream of #NunsBridges.
Plenty of Roach, Perch & Chub too.

Here's top & side views of a glossy little Pike. Note how this one's spotty & that above is stripey.
Lots Gudgeon too doing their thing on river bed, below the shoals of Roach, Chub & Dace. #Thetford #RiverThet #RiverLittleOuse #Freshwaterfishes #Pike #Chalkstreams #Norfolk 6/9
Besides Chub and Dace, delighted to see a Common Bream & a grumpy (as ever!) Bullhead, where the River Thet joins the Little Ouse in Thetford town centre

Masses of fish fry of several species in Rivers Thet & Little Ouse in Thetford town centre, big shoals of Minnows & plenty Dace & Chub bombing around, as well as Roach. Almost all seemed in great health.
