Wonder if the lack of diversity of fish in the Little Ouse through #ThetfordForest above #Brandon on this bright, tranquil, autumn afternoon - with the water 11.5°C - could be because the fish are already retreating to their winter haunts? #LittleOuse #Suffolk #sundayvibes 10/10

But under the two stones I lifted there were handsome Bullheads, also pretty Freshwater Nerite (Theodoxus fluviatilis) shells. And overhead a Kingfisher burnished against the blue sky. Also a ♀️ Mandarin Duck &, of course, Mute Swans. #BirdsSeenIn2022

Stunning sculpted reefs of Starwort (Callitriche) flow above the clean sands and gravels of the River Little Ouse, through Thetford Forest, above Brandon. But in places there are long strands of a crinkly algae. #Chalkstreams #RiverLittleOuse #ThetfordForest #LittleOuse

Much of the surface of the Little Ouse headwaters was covered in this repulsive scum (some of it embedded with flies). The question is, is this human effluent - or could it be produced by some sort of natural process? #chalkstreams #littleouse #riverlittleouse #suffolk 6/22

In April, got in River Little Ouse (12.1°C) at The Banks, Blo' Norton only 1.25km from source marked on OS map. Here it's only a stream. V disappointed & puzzled still to find the water gross - low visibility and covered in scum. #LittleOuse #chalkstreams #norfolk #suffolk 3/22

Also in the Little Ouse upstream of Brandon saw a Roach looking like it has dropsy? And some very chunky looking large Roach that I wondered if are hybrids with Chub? Quite a few small Chub too. #roach #chalkstreams #littleouse #breckland #norfolk #Suffolk #freshwaterfishes

There are some beautiful, good-sized Perch, some hanging around in small gangs, in the River Little Ouse upstream of Brandon.

In the Little Ouse above Brandon there were some lovely drifts of Perfoliate Pondweed (Potamogeton perfoliatus). Also some banks of Starwort (Calitriche sp) and Canadian Pondweed (Elodea canadensis). #Wildflowerhour #LittleOuse #Chalkstreams #Breckland #WestSuffolk #Suffolk 6/7

A dominant plant of the River Little Ouse above Brandon is Arrowhead - here are flowers above & below water. Also plenty of River Water Dropwort.
Not sure who this broad strap-shaped leaf belongs to - there was a little bit of it? #WildflowerID. #Wildflowerhour #LittleOuse 6/7

As you swim up the Little Ouse from Brandon, every little while you find yourself in a loose shoal of bigger fish - some stonking Perch, lots of Roach - some a really good size; even quite a few Rudd.

Never seen more Gudgeon than on the clean sands & gravels of the Little Ouse upstream of Brandon. Also masses of Minnows, a few in breeding condition, & many Chub, small and medium sized with one more like 65 cm.

One of the many Three-spined Sticklebacks in the River Little Ouse upstream of Hopton was diseased.
But on the plus side, saw 2 small Perch, my first Perch of the year.

Despite thick layers of silt, at least River Little Ouse upstream of Hopton has abundant Three-spined Sticklebacks & quite a few Caddis Fly Larvae.

Beautiful autumnal swim down #RiverLittleOuse from A11 bridge, through clouds of riverflies.

Visibility better downstream of Abbey Heath Gauging Station.

Privilege to be in relaxed physical contact with such beautiful creatures as Minnows in River Little Ouse. A delight apparently to brighten their day. Lucky my gloves are part fingerless!

Downstream of #NunsBridges, Thetford, a lot of algae in the #LittleOuse perhaps due to nutrients from waterfowl collecting to be fed. It's beloved by Three-spined Sticklebacks. In the sandy gaps in the algae, pools of Minnows relaxed in the evening sunshine.

In the River Little Ouse at Thetford, downstream of Nun's Bridges, top find a Napoleonic? (1790-1820) clay pipe.

Also a v large, v dead, Grey Squirrel.

And 1st #MySwim with a live mammal, but fear it was a Brown Rat not a Water Vole?

Yesterday evening, just downstream of Brandon found at least 3 bikes chucked in Little Ouse from North bank. Of interest @MildnhallPolice @StolenBikes_UK?

Could this be Shining Pondweed, downstream of Brandon @carlsayerUCL @JoP24048538? Lovely lots Yellow Water Lily, Arrowhead & River Water Dropwort also present. But this other plant 10' tall downstream of lock presumably fell in from bank? Willowherb?

As well as this freshwater snail resident in the Brandon Staunch Eel Ladder, around the lock are some superb freshwater sponges with eerie green fingers waving in the current.

Watched this hunting jack Pike slash twice through a shoal of Minnows but by time I got the camera on him, he was biding his time, the foolhardy minnows inspecting him like savannah antelopes do with lions.

Under the bridge over the River Little Ouse at Brandon, freshwater sponges, some green, some yellow or white, spookily wave their fingers at you.
