Stunning sculpted reefs of Starwort (Callitriche) flow above the clean sands and gravels of the River Little Ouse, through Thetford Forest, above Brandon. But in places there are long strands of a crinkly algae. #Chalkstreams #RiverLittleOuse #ThetfordForest #LittleOuse

Much of the surface of the Little Ouse headwaters was covered in this repulsive scum (some of it embedded with flies). The question is, is this human effluent - or could it be produced by some sort of natural process? #chalkstreams #littleouse #riverlittleouse #suffolk 6/22

There are some beautiful, good-sized Perch, some hanging around in small gangs, in the River Little Ouse upstream of Brandon.

One of the many Three-spined Sticklebacks in the River Little Ouse upstream of Hopton was diseased.
But on the plus side, saw 2 small Perch, my first Perch of the year.

River Little Ouse running through @_BTO Nunnery Lakes looking grungy & swollen after the rain - not tempting for a swim. On Alders, am guessing Velvet Shank & below, Common Bonnet (Mycena galericulata)?

The #RiverLittleOuse downstream of the A11 at Thetford is a graveyard of a phenomenal number of cans, bottles, crisp packets, DVDs as well as mobile phones, car registration plates, sunglasses, loyalty cards etc.

Among the healthy freshwater plants indicative of good water quality in the #RiverLittleOuse downstream of the A11 at Thetford, the usual succession of bicycles, tyres, wallets, filofaxes & handbags but first time have come across backpacks & coats. Mostly quite old.

Beautiful autumnal swim down #RiverLittleOuse from A11 bridge, through clouds of riverflies.

Visibility better downstream of Abbey Heath Gauging Station.

The mile+ of #RiverLittleOuse (12.3°C, but warmer downstream of sewage works!) from Thetford Riverside to A11 is richly vegetated including gorgeous long flowing tresses of Chalkstream? Water Crowfoot but visibility poor until downstream of weir (No 1 Staunch). #Chalkstreams 3/7

The Little Ouse at @_BTO Nunnery Lakes riddled with Signal Crayfish, the freshly dug sand from their dens bright against the disappointing amount of silt. Quite a lot of glugea in the Sticklebacks. Lots minnows but surprisingly few other fish on this stretch. #riverlittleouse 2/4

Here's top & side views of a glossy little Pike. Note how this one's spotty & that above is stripey.
Lots Gudgeon too doing their thing on river bed, below the shoals of Roach, Chub & Dace. #Thetford #RiverThet #RiverLittleOuse #Freshwaterfishes #Pike #Chalkstreams #Norfolk 6/9

Besides Chub and Dace, delighted to see a Common Bream & a grumpy (as ever!) Bullhead, where the River Thet joins the Little Ouse in Thetford town centre

Masses of fish fry of several species in Rivers Thet & Little Ouse in Thetford town centre, big shoals of Minnows & plenty Dace & Chub bombing around, as well as Roach. Almost all seemed in great health.

Yesterday evening, just downstream of Brandon found at least 3 bikes chucked in Little Ouse from North bank. Of interest @MildnhallPolice @StolenBikes_UK?

As well as this freshwater snail resident in the Brandon Staunch Eel Ladder, around the lock are some superb freshwater sponges with eerie green fingers waving in the current.

Such a privilege to be able to spend quality time with so many big, beautiful, friendly Perch at Brandon Staunch on the River Little Ouse.

Good amounts of Greater Water Moss there too.

Here's what it's like snorkelling a relatively open stretch of the #RiverLittleOuse, downstream of #KnettishallHeath car park - with the rare treat of a pool of fish at the end, tho' tricky to photograph thro' the murk.
