At last, the flags are up along Diss high road. Union Jacks and St George flags on every lamppost. I’m so proud of our country and the entrepreneurial spirit involved. [sarcasm emoji].

By 31 May the flowers of Yellow Water-Lilies (Nuphar lutea) gild the surface of the Cut-Off Channel at Wretton, while below, their wonderfully varied leaf forms dominate the aquascape.

Water Fleas (Daphnia) are a type of Cladoceran Crustacean.
Sometimes they resemble flakes of gold in the sunlight.
They swim using their 2nd set of antennae.
The main concentrations were near the marginal vegetation. Yum fish food. #WaterFlea #Daphnia #Breckland #Norfolk #invertebrate #rivers 5/25

Tremendous day spent with the #Breckland Flora Group on their visit to Ranscombe Farm. Great discussions about all things arable and botanical!

Celebrating my partner's birthday with a #Breckland jaunt. Very parched and with remarkably few flowers, but good to see Field Mouse-ear, Mossy Stonecrop, Star-of-Bethlehem, Spring Heath Robberfly and a smart Cucumber Spider on Gorse...which smelt deliciously of coconut

I'd love to understand why this beautiful 0.3km stretch of Old Carr Stream, a potentially prime #Norfolk #chalkstream, has so few fish - saw no sticklebacks, 1 Bullhead, 1 shy Brown Trout - but also healthy looking parr (maybe 2, or 2nd could have been a bullhead).

Driving up towards Eastmoor, you'd never guess the wonderworld snaking hidden beneath the line of trees, in the form of precious #chalkstream, Old Carr Stream, fringed in places by Wood Small-reed Calamagrostis epigejos & beyond which lies some lakes bsky.app/profile/nume.... #Norfolk #Breckland 8/9

Also in places the Old Carr Stream bed by Oxborough Wood is covered with the cases of Integripalpia caddisfly larvae along with detritus such as this elegant bird wish bone (Furcula) & less welcome but more ubiquitous gun cartridges & crisp packets. #chalkstreams #riverflies #Norfolk #Breckland 4/9

In Old Carr Stream the fresh reed growth was shooting up from the chalky riverbed, which was littered (as is this stream all the way up, with spent gun cartridges).
Suddenly as I tried to return downstream, I found myself in a beautiful lake and reed bed system.

In the clear waters of Old Carr Stream I spotted a few tufts of Frogspawn algae (Batrachospermaceae, a family of freshwater red algae in the Phylum Rhodophyta) flowing in the brisk current, often a sign of reasonable water quality. #PhycologyFriday #Chalkstreams #Norfolk #Breckland #freshwater

Here is an Alder rootscape, a sprig of fresh growth of Fool's Watercress (Helosciadium nodiflorum) the dominant macrophyte in Old Carr Stream, & up by the spring, a tuft of Frogspawn Algae (Batrachospermaceae).

I entered Old Carr Stream by a Hazel in full lambkins-tail display. Mostly it was tough going up this #chalkstream through reedbeds, which will be impassable due to fresh growth in a few weeks. The rare pools, like by this grand Alder, failed to reveal any Trout or Bullheads. #Breckland #Norfolk 6/9

The super-clear water at source of Old Carr Stream starts just upstream of the inflow from a smaller, siltier stream from the east. The approach upstream to this point is tough to snorkel, largely through reedbed, with welcome patches of chalky, flinty gravel. Water 4°C. #Chalkstreams #Breckland 5/9

Today, feeling balmy and spring like around Beachamwell and Shingham, it was all Skylark song and mad Hares getting ready for March - in excess of 20 in some fields.

Ornithopus perpusillus

Some of the commoner #Breckland specialities had a very good year, perhaps helped by a wet spring. I've seen way more hoary cinquefoil Potentilla argentea and bird's-foot Ornithopus perpusillus this year than I've had hot dinners.

The River Gadder continues on its way, still beautiful below the Gooderstone sewage works, with a series of ivy clad fallen trees to pass under, & lower down a silty willow carr to wend thro'. Last Sunday, the water was a cooling 17.7 °C (air 20.5). #chalkstreams #breckland 7/11

Right by the outflow of Gooderstone Sewage Works a Pike looked very at home. There was a high density of these beasts - all c30 cm long - in the 750 m stretch of the River Gadder downstream of it. Also plenty of Chabot Bullheads. #Breckland #Norfolk #Chalkstreams #Teamfish 3/11

On Sunday met this big beauty hiding away in its lair on the River Gadder downstream of Gooderstone sewage works, but compared to upstream, remarkably few - only a handful - other Brown Trout on this 750 m stretch of Norfolk chalk stream. #MySwim #Browntrout #Breckland 1/11
