Just to add to this, *if* LLMs have a business model (which is not yet clear, as they are nor profitable) it is create FOMO about progress. Unless you're looking at the application of narrow AI models in specific highly structured domains, the business of accuracy is still human.

Quarterly planning. Jira links. Dependency maps. The red wool of doom. Approval boards everywhere.

We build structures that add weight, not value - then wonder where impact went.

Start simpler: priorities, alignment on outcomes, autonomy to execute.
Then remove the friction.

Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez:

You may have heard that Spain is alone. They’re the same people who said that when we recognized the State of Palestine, and then others followed.

We are not alone — we are the first. Those who will end up alone are the ones defending the indefensible.

How AI assistance impacts the formation of coding skills Anthropic is an AI safety and research company that's working to build reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems.

“We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery.”

Props to Anthropic for studying the effects of their creation and reporting results that are not probably what they wished for

On my way to #ukgc26 - slightly nervous as the last unconference I attended was easily 10 or so years ago. But I am more excited, so there’s that

Baltimore is seeing the city’s fewest homicides in 50 years. Here’s why. Multiple people have taken credit for the historic drop that mirrors a national decrease in violent crimes. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott says it’s due to a community-based approach to gun violence.

#Baltimore Mayor #BrandonScott invested in 42 summer youth camps, 29 literacy programs, extended the rec center hours to 11 p.m, planned block parties, opened the pools for safe fun, & opened several schools up for summer classes. Crime is down 62%. 🔥🔥 www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

Dear UK government,

Let's be clear: our mental health is getting worse, and cutting benefits won’t help.

You claim mental health is being “overdiagnosed”, but where’s the evidence?

The reality is that our environment affects our wellbeing - pandemics, the cost of living crisis, political unrest and ongoing concerns around climate change are all taking their toll.

But when people seek help, they face months, or even years, of waiting.

Rhetoric like this is dangerous. It reinforces stigma and stops people getting support.

If you’re serious about change, listen to those affected. We can turn this crisis around - but only if the government works with us, not against us.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Mind

Building on our partnership with Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), we recently turned to their next challenge - bringing together four separate intranets that were creating major barriers to effective information sharing.

I’ve worked in intranets, digital workplaces, and comms long enough to see the same cycles repeat, the same mistakes made, and the same bright ideas crash and burn.

So here are the hard truths. Are you ready? Let’s go. 🧵

Do I know any (freelance) data scientists who could help with a small-ish bit of quant analysis, to help a really high profile bit of public policy? And/or can this post reach anyone who could help?

Eugenics isn't dead—it's thriving in tech A new book takes on the throughline from the rise of 20th-century eugenics to Silicon Valley.

In her new book “Predatory Data,” D&S affiliate Anita Say Chan traces a throughline from the rise of 20th-century eugenics to Silicon Valley, showing how data has been used to devalue human beings along eugenicist lines — both past and present. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
