There is a replica of that sculpture outside the courthouse in Rome, Georgia. A gift from Mussolini to the people of the "other Rome."
Pic is from 2003. I assume that the statue has not been moved to another location by local Puritans.

A view of the city of Narvik, Norway on a cloudy April day, with snowy mountain slopes rising in the distance.
An empty wooden bench between two bare trees, with a fantastic view of a fjord and snowy mountains.
Boats in the harbor, with mountains looming on the far side of the fjord.
A longhaired white cat with gray markings on its head and back. This was the only cat I saw in my wanderings.
Four years ago today, I was in Narvik, Norway. I spent the day wandering around the city, taking pictures. Here are a few.

A gray shorthair tabby cat checks for scents in a pot of yellow pansies. There are intersecting angles of border plants and concrete.
Kitty Narvik stops to inspect the pansies. Being a cat, he's not admiring them, but checking for animal scents.

1. As long as forests have existed, lightning has caused fires.
2. Indigenous people frequently used fire for various purposes.
3. European settlers discouraged fire use in the US, especially after the Great Fires of 1910.
4. Thus our current forests are different from those of the past.
A small train station in the town of Nattavaara, Sweden. Taken from the train window a few minutes before noon.
Lunch on the train, a wrap and a bottled soft drink. My phone and an orange folder are on the table next to the meal.
Entering the mountains west of Kiruna, Sweden. A snowy landscape with leafless birch trees and a small lake. Mountains with rounded tops rise near the horizon.
A lone homestead, with the house painted the brick red color that is popular in Scandinavia, surrounded by deep snow. There are scattered groups of leafless birch trees. The terrain rises towards a treeless mountain. Location is near the Sweden - Norway border.
More pictures from my train trip from Stockholm, Sweden to Narvik, Norway, four years ago today.

Yes, I get that look from him a lot!
Inside the Stockholm, Sweden train station, awaiting the night train.
Passengers next to the tracks in Stockholm, waiting for the night train to arrive.
View from my window, about 4 or 5 in the morning, showing a lake, mountains, and a pink glow on the horizon. Trees in the foreground are blurred by the train's motion. I rolled over and went back to sleep.
View from the rear car of the train, showing snow covered forest lands, and bright blue skies.
Four years ago today, I was taking the train across Sweden on the way to Narvik, Norway (yes, my cat is named after the town). Here are some scenes. See alt text.

A gray shorthair cat stands on the concrete drainage slab next to a house. In the foreground is a large pot full of yellow pansies.
Not all of my pics of Narvik turn out the way I planned. He was lying down, but by the time I lined him up with the flower pot, he was beginning to stand up to walk towards me. I did get some good pics of him next to the flowers, though.

At the time the land belonged to Hancock. Land changes hands so frequently that it might have a new owner. I had to sign my life away to get a key to their gates, and of course I had to return it at the end of the project.
Pinned location is approximate. Up Long Branch Road west of Shady Cove, then about 3 miles past a locked gate (I had a key), then hike north through the woods. I had an encounter with a mama bear and her cub on that mountainside!
Jesus never fails, but he got a D in Chemistry once. His Father was not happy.
A view of hazy distant mountains, framed by two jagged cliffs. A hawk glides through the center of the image.
On some of my forestry jobs, I've found myself on the #edge of the world. This pic is from 2018 in southwest Oregon, where I had to navigate a gap between two cliffs. Note the hawk in the distance.

A gray shorthair tabby cat lies on a sidewalk, looking very relaxed. His body is oriented to the right, with his tail, legs, and head all turned towards the camera.
It's always good to start a new week with a cat picture.

I saw Kamala in Macon a few weeks ago. It's kind of odd that she crisscrossed the country before going to Savannah. But then I'm not the one scheduling her appearances.
The sun sets behind a tall ponderosa pine in terrain that is nearly flat. Land in the foreground and center is treeless, covered with dry grass. Towards the horizon is a conifer forest. Clouds range in color from dark to white, depending on the angle of the sun.
Sunset on the plateau. Wallowa County, Oregon, September 2018.

Happy #Caturday everyone! When I'm outside, it's always a welcome sight when Narvik comes up to greet me.

I described one of my cats as a "proximity cat." She didn't care for sitting in my lap or being picked up, but she was always close by. She was a very affectionate kitty but did not feel a need to cling to me.
On the left, is the trunk of a young Douglas-fir tree; it is straight and nearly cylindrical. Taking up most of the remainder of the image is a madrone tree that is nearly horizontal. The trunk forks, and each fork twists and turns its way upwards. Madrone (aka madrona or arbutus) has dark flaky outer bark that peels away to reveal slick red inner bark.
Some trees take the direct path to sunlight, other trees take the long way. Douglas-fir and madrone in southwest Oregon, 2018. See alt text.

A gray shorthair tabby cat lies on an outdoor wooden stairway, facing right, with his right front foot resting on the step below.
This is one of Narvik's favorite poses, hanging one leg off the step and resting it on the step below.

View of the side of a brick building that has been painted white. The paint is fading. There are three windows. The two windows on the left are paired, with a brick archway above. The other window has its own arch, is larger, and the top pane is broken.
In need of attention. Old building in downtown Jackson, Georgia. Sometimes being the nonconformist isn't the best thing.

A gray shorthair cat sits upright on a wooden stairway, looking off to the left. Camera angle is from above his left ear.
Narvik is in quiet contemplation (probably contemplating whether it's time to ask to be fed again).

A view from ground level, looking up through an unusual tree with large oval leaves. A clump of rain lilies with white flowers blooms in the foreground. The branch of a sweetgum tree shows in the upper left. Sky is blue with no clouds.
A branch of an umbrella magnolia tree. Large oval leaves are at the bottom of the image. At the tip of the branch is a cream-colored flower about four inches tall, not quite open.
In a short span of time, the umbrella magnolia in my back yard goes from being bare, to having large leaves and creamy white flowers. Thanks to the extra-wide angle view available on my phone's camera, I was able to include the rain lilies at the base of the tree. #trees #bloomscrolling #photography
A gray shorthair tabby cat strides across a shady lawn. In the background are a metal fence, a large shrub, and various trees.
Walk this way. Here comes Narvik.

A few weeks ago I was with a group of people who hadn't even been born when that commercial aired, and someone started quoting it. The folks who created that commercial couldn't have imagined that the message would linger for decades!
A gray shorthair tabby cat sits on the bottom step of a wooden stairway, facing right with his head turned over his right shoulder. Sunlight is filtered through trees up above.
I have lots of pics of Narvik on this stairway. Sometimes he is near the top where he has a better view. Other times he is near the bottom where he can dash across the yard at a moment's notice.

A green anole clings to the edge of a wood post, upside down. The right side of the image is blurred by depth of field.
Green anoles frequently show up near my house. I came across this pic when looking at my files from 2017.

At home I grow the purple coneflowers. The butterflies really like them.
A gray shorthair tabby cat lies on a sidewalk, facing right with his right front leg extended forward. His head is tilted, and his eyes are nearly closed.
Sleepy Monday morning.

According to the Seek app, this is an upright prairie coneflower. The camera has focused on a single flower, and there are blurred flowers and stems in the background.
Pic taken while passing through Colorado a few summers ago.
