And a good TED talk is totally a performance with many rehearsals and support, often to an extent that's unachievable in real teaching scenarios

Mmmm, coaching isn't a 'performance' but I think it has performative elements, particularly improv and responding to the other

Absolutely, improv doesn't mean making it up - you've got to have a firm basis to build on and then turn it into a dialogue with the 'audience' (e.g. listen to/watch jazz musicians) #LTHEchat

At UWE (and soon to be trialled at BSU), @shaunmudd.bsky.social worked with colleagues from the Bristol Improv Theatre to design and facilitate workshops for academic staff

A4: there's something about personal professional identity: those who identify more as researchers, for e.g., may not be interested in more than basic competence in teaching. Sorry, more of a challenge than an opportunity!

I learnt this giving a keynote a few years ago. I was convinced the other, more flamboyant speaker was much better and wished I could be like them. Afterwards, I got some lovely feed from a Board of Governors member who said how much better and professional I was, and that she preferred my style

I love a bit of etymology! One of the many reasons I prefer 'expertise' to 'excellence'

I definitely agree re experience. As a novice, you're concentrating on getting things 'right', getting content across etc. As @suebecks.bsky.social says, I think your own personal artistry is something that you develop over time. You might also lose it when you find yourself in a novice situation...
