Well, someone obviously told Anita Rani the correct pronunciation of #matrescence while they were trailing the podcast #WomansHour.
It’s a word we’ve been advocating for @mothersuncovered.bsky.social
for over 8 years. You can look us up here too www.matrescence.uk

It was a privilege to speak at the #MaternityAPPG chaired by Michelle Welsh MP last week. A powerful discussion, with impassioned pleas from those working with #harmedmums to bring real change and righteous anger from the women themselves who’ve had devastating experiences. #birthtrauma
Very nice. Here’s another 🕯️

Anyone identify…? #Christmas is magical… and absolutely chaotic. If you’ve ticked even one of these, you’re in good company.
Our @mothersuncovered.bsky.social
groups exist for moments just like this. The tears, the laughs,
the overwhelm and everything in between. #christmasfails
#ChildrenInNeed Children need happy, healthy parents in order to thrive. And mothers especially need support for their mental & emotional wellbeing.
It would mean so much to our small charity @mothersuncovered.bsky.social
to receive any donations, however small

Delighted to share our latest episode of The Secret Life of Mothers podcast. I interview award-winning filmmaker Ida Melum, who has created a vibrant & powerful short ‘#OvaryActing’ in which the central character is deciding whether to have kids, being besieged by family members and her own ovary!

Ali relays a beautiful story of bravery, courage and resilience. Even though unfairly short, Romy’s life changed Ali’s, she believes for the better. As you can imagine Ali’s story is honest and difficult to hear at times

Today marks the start of #BabyLossAwarenessWeek.
Two years ago, I spoke to the inspirational Ali Norell for The Secret Life Of Mothers podcast who sadly lost her baby daughter suddenly at 4 months, which is every parent’s darkest nightmare.

What does a good maternal mental health service look like? In my opinion it’s critical to have peer-led spaces where mothers can discuss their #matrescence and the realities of motherhood in an honest way without fear of repercussions. @mothersuncovered.bsky.social

There is not the sense of a problem to be fixed, which is often the case with mothers referred to therapy for postnatal depression. With greater understanding into the mental, emotional, societal and physical changes that matrescence brings, we can start to support them better. #mothersuncovered
….instrumental in helping them adjust to #motherhood and reduced their need for #NHS treatment. A lot say we have saved their life. But we have to fight, tooth and nail, to get funding. Peer-led groups are cheaper than statutory care and build a community to support mothers.
We need to ensure those involved in caring for mothers are fully aware of the seismic transition women go through in #matrescence. @mothersuncovered.bsky.social
has worked with close to 3000 women since 2008. So many have said sharing their experiences in our peer-led groups has been vital…
At the #LabourConference2025 I will be attending this roundtable event bringing together experts, parliamentarians, campaigners and clinicians to discuss maternal mental health services in the UK.
My focus, as ever, to shine a spotlight on the need for peer-led services.
The regulators are not being included in the investigation into maternity care? That’s like having a ship without a rudder. Beyond insulting for the families involved and for mothers we work with @mothersuncovered.bsky.social
who have suffered. #maternityinvestigation #BBCRadio4Today
For #WorldSuicidePreventionDay a piece I wrote about the recent #EmergencyAlerts and how so many members of society are flagging their OWN emergency alerts, ie their mental health, which are not heeded.

This Monday was Mums Equal Pay Day, nearly 3 months earlier than Equal Pay Day. Working mothers earn around £302 less every week than working fathers. It’s often not even viable for mothers to work due to childcare fees. Their knowledge and experience is wasted. #workingmothers
The birth rate is falling, yet people can’t afford to have children…🤷🏻♀️
Most families have barely enough money for basics.
And rushing mothers back to work (as if looking after a baby isn’t work 🙄) isn’t helping.
To help families & therefore help society, there needs to be investment to support them.
Adorable! 😍
See below for slice of heaven clip from the mountains in Portugal - goat bells and a choir drifting up from the valley. Truly stupendous.
Thank you to ABC magazine for publishing my piece about the importance of #matrescence for mothers and their families.
At @mothersuncovered.bsky.social we know how helpful an understanding of matrescence is for #mothers’ wellbeing.

Erudite lecturer and fearsome intellectual. (This picture reminds me of Robin Day)
So many had to…
- give birth alone
- attend appointments alone
- receive distressing news about their baby’s death alone
- try to show health professionals their scars via a screen.

These stories need to be heard.
