A short bit of video of today's American Golden Plover at Otmoor.
Posts by Ben Sheldon
A first summer American Golden Plover which appeared today at Otmoor - a new county bird for me and quite a few others. Last one was in c 2012.
A long read, but really worth it for the deep analysis (on several levels)
This is an outstanding piece of writing and analysis: powerful combination of data analysis, reportage and socio-economic analysis.
In London for a couple of days so walked back from @royalsociety.org via St James’s and Hyde Parks. Surprised to hear singing Cetti’s Warblers at both sites - so cool that these colonise these urban green spaces
Usually we put seminars on hold during the field season, but very pleased to have Alexandra Cones here giving a seminar as well as teaching a STAN workshop over the next couple of days; seminar details below - please share and feel free to join
Still had a frisson of pleasure from finding a first winter bird in the local reservoir roost here last night!
Almost a case of spot the Black-headed Gull among the Med Gulls and Cattle Egrets there... how things have changed!
Putting the abstract of this dumpster file/performance art (h/t @sheardcat.bsky.social) here for posterity. Not here to dunk on the authors, but Springer/Nature: whatever happened to some sort of quality control? And where does that APC of $2850 really go? This sat for >6 months before retraction...
What is this? Late October?
I'm all for a bit more of "The big math changes to small math"
A particularly epic eBird write up!
I think this is a Pacific Golden Plover
Happened to be passing close by yesterday evening so dropped in to look at the American Golden Plover at Hook-with-Warsash. Phone video (with Grey Plover) handheld on Swarovski AT balance again. Amazing tool for mobile (eg bike) birding
Handheld American Golden Plover in Hants today
What tripod are you using Steve? And is this with the Arca plate it comes with. I’ve only used handheld so far - bloody amazing for birding & can get pretty adequate phone scoped stills/videos handheld but on a tripod imagine even better
Really transformative technology in my view - makes a telescope portable & usable almost anywhere
+the little mirrored dance steps...
Rather embarrassed myself this evening by calling this female duck on Port Meadow on first glimpse (left) as a female Garganey... Better views (right) revealed it to be quite obviously a female Mallard with a very striking face pattern!
A very detailed take-down (only part 1!) of Ridley’s COVID-19 conspiracy theory talk. He’s an embarrassment
A program that, to those of us on the other side of the Atlantic, has long been something we've held up as example of what could & should be done to support some of the most important types of field study. Very concerning to see this under threat
A scientific publishing credibility Tragedy of the Commons?
I think the pale primary tips also fit Hume’s but not Green. Good record either way!
Could it be a Hume’s Warbler?

Female Scaup at Farmoor this evening. Have been testing the Swarovski AT Balance last few days - pretty amazed by the quality. This video shot on phone, through hand-held 'scope, standing exposed on the causeway at Farmoor in a F5-6 wind
First of many I am sure! Very good to see this
1/🧵My first preprint!🐛🌡️
We examine how environmental effects experienced during one life-history stage persist and modulate environmental responses in later life-history stages.

New preprint! We sequenced 175 'Alalā (Hawaiian crow) genomes to understand why >50% of eggs fail to hatch in a species recovered from just 9 individuals. What we found was a both exciting and surprising. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
