I used to wonder what it felt like to be a scientist sounding the alarm on:

tobacco
AIDS

Now we’re living it.

Turns out the barrier isn’t evidence.

It’s denial.

The thing about there needing to be a path of redemption for people who have been “canceled” is: there already is a path to redemption and it’s called “redeeming yourself.” The path is open! No one is blocking that! You just have to do it!

Every week I hear some version of "well, you've chosen to live this way."

Yes, I choose to try to avoid repeat COVID infections, but I didn't choose to live in an ableist society where everyday things like going to a coffee shop or a movie come with the risk of chronic illness

1.56	Reliance on the historical misunderstanding that it was possible to clearly distinguish between aerosol and droplet transmission directly affected infection prevention and control guidance, as well as the precautions that were advised. As particles larger than five microns were seen as more likely to contain the virus, behaving ballistically and only travelling about 1.5 metres before falling to the ground (see Figure 4), fluid-resistant surgical masks were considered capable of acting as a boundary against inhalation of particles. Similarly, keeping beds two metres apart was considered sufficient to prevent particles from reaching patients in other beds.98 This did not account, however, for the possibility that an infectious particle more than five microns in size may not behave as a droplet but as an aerosol – which could remain airborne for some time, travel further than 1.5 metres and permeate a fluid-resistant surgical mask.
1.57	The failure to appreciate and guard against the risk posed by routes of transmission other than droplet or contact put healthcare workers and patients at unnecessary risk of When asked whether the Covid-19 infection prevention and control guidance took a sufficiently cautious approach to the risk of aerosol transmission outside of aerosol generating procedures, Laura Imrie (Clinical Lead for NHS Scotland Assure and Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection Scotland from 2018, and member of the UK IPC Cell) said:
“I think the position we were in, it was very constrained by the dichotomy of describing something as ‘droplet’ or ‘airborne’.”99

1.58	It is no longer appropriate to rely on this dichotomy. References to cut-off points based on particle size and the belief that it was possible to distinguish clearly between droplet and aerosol transmission – and the precautions required as a result – were and are wrong. They should no longer be relied on in healthcare guidance.

Similarly sections 1.56 - 1.58 find a "failure to appreciate and guard against the risk" and that today's clinical infection control paradigms based on droplet as distinct from aerosol transmission "were and are wrong" and "should no longer be relied on".

This is ENRAGING.

I have older kids now but even when they were little, I’m pretty sure they didn’t get one cold per month with each lasting an average of 14 days.

We are normalizing the amount of sickness in kids.

And it’s head-shaking to witness.

The trick for me has been treating my N95 like a seatbelt.

I buckle up every time I drive even when going somewhere nearby that I've visited safely for decades. Similarly, I wear an N95 whenever I share indoor air even if there is only one other person in the room.

Fewer decisions = less stress.

Here’s my occasional reminder that if you get long COVID, resources are scarce. All of the decent doctors treating it have waitlists three years long or aren’t taking new patients at all. Autonomic testing is a bitch to schedule and isn’t widely available.

Your periodic reminder that in times of geopolitical instability - domestic, international, or both - an important element of building and maintaining both individual and societal resilience is to stay as healthy as possible. Protect your body and your brain: wear a respirator.

Bottom line from the last 6 years of COVID research : If you’ve got blood vessels, you’d be wise to avoid additional infections.

Now is a great time to normalize wearing a respirator. Might feel awkward at first, but every person who does makes it easier for others to follow. Be a leader. đŸ˜·

Explicitly capitalist media is telling you that getting/continuing to get COVID is really bad for you and is, mortifyingly, still doing more to warn you than most public health leaders are.

Samantha Crausman, 28, has had ongoing symptoms since a COVID infection 4 years ago. She and her parents were fully vaccinated when they got COVID in 2022, but only she didn’t recover. At risk of worsening with reinfection, her family still lives with strict pandemic-level protections.
