🌿 "Green" cities aren't automatically just cities. @ianguelovski.bsky.social keynote at TU Dortmund was a reminder that climate adaptation & urban greening can drive displacement & deepen inequality if justice isn't built into planning from the start. #ClimateJustice #UrbanJustice

🟢❌The #EUGreenDeal drives essential #climateaction BUT there’s a Green Paradox: Climate policies can accelerate displacement, #greengentrification, housing unaffordability + "renovictions."

Nature should not be a “white leisure reserve.” It should be a shared cultural space, safe, welcoming, and meaningful for everyone. #Greenjustice is #climatejustice.
The solution isn’t more green branding, but green spaces tailored for specific needs. In cities for example, people ask for:
☂️ shade
🚰 drinking water
🚻 clean toilets
In warming cities, green spaces need to provide climate refuge, not just a pretty view
Many green spaces are still designed for quiet, individual, white middle-class leisure. But for many families, nature is about:
👨👩👧👦 being together
🍽 eating
⚽ playing
💬 talking
When design doesn’t match real life, people are pushed out.
People born in the Global South tend to use local parks where they can socialize and children can play, rather than the nearby natural park of Collserola. Why? Not distance. Not money. Women especially feel unsafe and out of place.
🌳 What we call “normal” ways of enjoying #nature are often very white, middle-class habits that are treated as universal. A new study in two racialized neighborhoods of #Barcelona shows how race and gender shape who feels welcome in #greenspaces and who doesn’t. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
