Want to switch countries for a postdoc? Specifically, are you European, or are you non-European wanting to come to Europe? Now's the time to reach out to potential host labs!

(It's very normal to cold-email a PI about potentially hosting -- don't be shy!)

Yep this is my Monday too! Four coming from my lab. Not sure any are in the scream category but also none are done yet…

So pleased to share that @amanda-meuser.bsky.social 's work is now published in Molecular Ecology! This was a particularly cool study, because it revealed very high rates of hybridization in a system with many closely related species.

An exterior door snowed in with over 2 feet of snow

Day 2 of the Blizzard of ‘26: deep snow drifts surround the home. The children are hopped up on sugar and have found a harmonica and a lightsaber. Worse, we’re all out of margarita supplies!

I also have no idea of our totals. Driveway was 11” but 24” or so by back door…

We’ll try! I must thank Atlantic Canada for the concept of Storm Chips. We take it very seriously in our house.

This might be the biggest snowstorm I’ve ever seen - and I’ve lived in really snowy places for my entire adult life! We’re hunkered down with our chips, cupcakes, and snow shovels, waiting to see just how much snow we get.

You might not be using the term "AI" correctly.

If you have ever fit a line to data, you’ve built an artificial intelligence model.

AI is much broader than chatbots. Read about how AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Large Language Models fit together.

Drought-triggered restriction on North Platte River squeezes spigots for Wyoming towns - WyoFile Though full extent of the water pinch is unknown, the state is asking municipalities to assess potential water service shortfalls.

State water officials are asking towns and industry along the North Platte River to assess their water rights and whether they might have to tap into an emergency water bank.

For now, those with "junior" rights must shut off their spigots, with little snow and water relief in the forecast.

It certainly looks like 2026 will require a lot more running and fiction…

Woman in running clothes on a cliff overlooking Lake Superior

I coped with 2025 by reading and running. I read 52 books, mostly fiction. 34 new to me, 18 comfort rereads. I also ran 1,200 miles, including 2 50km races and a 43 mile fun run along Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks.

If a “little toy doll(y) that toddles and coos” is on your list, Salmonid Claus is definitely going to deliver on Day 21 of #25DaysofFishmas!

We end the northwest leg of our road trip with the Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), a brightly colored fish + this week’s #SundayFishSketch mystery species!

Evolution Has No Plan: Why Organisms Don’t Rewrite Their DNA A quick explanation of some common misunderstandings about evolution.

✍️New blog post! Evolution Has No Plan: Why Organisms Don’t Rewrite Their DNA
jenteottenburghs.wordpress.com/2025/12/18/e...

The news articles on polar bears that are “rewriting their DNA in response to climate change” triggered me to write this blog post. Evolution has no foresight.

No need to just dream it! On Day 16 of #25DaysofFishmas, our road trip heads to the high country for the Bonneville Cisco (Prosopium gemmifer), a species of freshwater whitefish found only in Bear Lake on the border of southeast Idaho and northern Utah.

Are you a sucker for cheesy holiday movies? Well, you’re in good company!

Day 17 of #25DaysofFishmas brings us the Largescale Sucker (Catostomus macrocheilus), a fish whose distinctive feeding habits and even scientific name - which means “large lips” - makes it perfect for mistletoe lovers 😘

A beautiful shiner wearing a Santa hat; the text says December 13

The beautiful shiner is a small fish (<3.5 in/9 cm) that's part of the Leuciscidae family (shiners, daces, minnows) and the Cyprinella genus - also known as sailfin shiners. Like many other Cyprinella species, male beautiful shiners are known for their vibrant breeding colors #25DaysofFishmas

And also the ref. genome we used for analyses of all 3 species was C. latipinnis, since that's the only one we had assembled.

A novel sex-associated genomic region in Catostomus fish species Abstract. Genomic regions that influence sex are hypothesized to play a key role in evolutionary diversification, as sex determination mechanisms may promo

We've found some signal for bluehead sucker (Catostomus discobolus), but didn't get a clear indication for the two other species in our analysis, except that we think that sex associated genomic regions might differ across this group of hybridizing sucker species. doi.org/10.1093/jher...
