So pleased to share that @amanda-meuser.bsky.social 's work is now published in Molecular Ecology! This was a particularly cool study, because it revealed very high rates of hybridization in a system with many closely related species.

The beautiful shiner is a small fish (<3.5 in/9 cm) that's part of the Leuciscidae family (shiners, daces, minnows) and the Cyprinella genus - also known as sailfin shiners. Like many other Cyprinella species, male beautiful shiners are known for their vibrant breeding colors #25DaysofFishmas
And also the ref. genome we used for analyses of all 3 species was C. latipinnis, since that's the only one we had assembled.
We've found some signal for bluehead sucker (Catostomus discobolus), but didn't get a clear indication for the two other species in our analysis, except that we think that sex associated genomic regions might differ across this group of hybridizing sucker species. doi.org/10.1093/jher...
