Gervais, despite being a Globes hosting vet, did not show up to the ceremony, and Sykes used that to her benefit. “Ricky Gervais, I love you … for not being here,” she said while presenting the award. “I love you, Ricky, but if you win, and I get to accept the award on your behalf, you are going to thank God.” The audience then laughed heartily, but she wasn’t done. “And the trans community!” she added.
Wanda Sykes presented the award for Best Stand-up Comedy Performance at the Golden Globes—Ricky Gervais won the award. She accepted the award on his behalf and said: “He would like to thank God and the trans community”. Gervais has made transphobic jokes in specials and transphobic comments online.
