If I’m being asked, there needs to be an expectation that I will be paid. I reserve the right to waive the latter, but it’s still 100% my call. I also reserve the right to judge any expectation that I won’t be paid with •extreme• prejudice. 2/2

My philosophy on volunteerism going forward: If I say I’m going to do something and I haven’t been asked, I’m #volunteering and won’t be asking to be paid for my time and efforts. 1/2

Finally! I was beginning to worry that nobody would catch it. 🙂

After #MTPC, I started wondering if there would be enough @mikrotik.social users on this side of the Atlantic to warrant something similar. I’m not convinced yet but, should it that ever change, #RouterOS User Symposium (ROUS) has a nice ring to it… if we can convince people that it exists. #IYKYK

Is our obsession with IPv4 tying us unhealthily to platforms and sacrificing our freedoms? 5/5

3 days ago 1 0 1 0

This brings us to #platforms. It’s getting harder to host anything ourselves anymore without paying a (usually foreign) IaaS/SaaS platform to do it for us. We now live in an age where data sovereignty and privacy are at the forefront of our thinking and maybe, just maybe, we want other options. 4/?

The obsession human beings have to find excuses to avoid change was highly underestimated. IPv6 took 22 years to become an Internet Standard and NAT became so entrenched that peer-to-peer networking became mostly unnecessary so long as we could see cat memes on our favourite platforms. 3/?

NAT was a tactical move to stave off IPv4 exhaustion (at the cost of limiting the peer-to-peer nature of the Internet) and IPv6 was the strategic answer for scalable growth. 2/?

Something to consider about all of the efforts to sustain #IPv4 so far beyond its original shelf life. #NAT and #IPv6 were thought out at roughly the same time. 1/?

In Silicon Valley, you don’t learn #AI. AI learns •you•. (Apologies to Yakov Smirnoff.)

Listened to a presentation today from someone with an accent that made every instance of “configuration” sound like “conflagration” instead. Thinking about this further, sometimes there’s little difference between the two. #NetEng

Hm. RADIUS bandwidth profile was defined as 1024/8192 B/s instead of 1024/8192 KB/s. I now have an explanation for the angry tickets from a few customers. Easily corrected. I also know that my traffic restrictions are working correctly… if not as intended. #Oops #NetEng

Ah, the joy of building from source: repeatedly figuring out the next reason for the build failure. Time to throw on Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2” to establish the setting for this afternoon’s work. #WrongDoItAgain

If a document is old, it’s still valid if nothing has replaced it. Lastly, if we’re being told that something is policy and a reference can’t be cited, it’s unsubstantiated opinion until it can. 3/3 #Policy #Governance #Documentation

If a new document supersedes another, mark the old document as historic, indicate the document that supersedes it, and reference the old document in the new one. (A list of changes specific changes would be absolutely wonderful.) 2/? #Policy #Governance #Documentation

Organizational rules that need to be observed more rigorously: If we have multiple types of governing documents, clearly define their order of precedence to avoid conflict. 1/? #Policy #Governance #Documentation

Whether we’re dealing with an #MSP, #IaaS, #SaaS, #AI, or service agreements on hardware, the folks selling it will do everything they can to ensure that we’re invested to the point where it’s an order of magnitude harder to leave than it is to stay. 2/2

There’s a longer and more well thought out piece to be written here, but I’ll start with a simple summary: Subscription revenue is an addictive drug for businesses. 1/2 #MSP #IaaS #SaaS #AI

Another one. Not politics this time. In what universe would I knowingly follow someone who's all about the sportsball? Anybody else running into folks on their follow list that shouldn't be there?
