It's Purple Day! Discussing ion channels, the menstrual cycle, sleep, and genetic epilepsies, Lucy, Daniel, Tina and Jessica give us a glimpse of the diversity and complexities of this wide-ranging, multi-faceted disorder as well as approaches to treatment. #epilepsy #purpleday

Happy Purple Day from the Cousin lab!!
Huge thanks to @hantan98.bsky.social for completing the work started by Andrew and Robyn many moons ago!! Many thanks also to CHDI for funding!
Excess ADBE was conserved across all cell types examined and intriguingly was due to huntingtin haploinsufficiency, rather than a toxic gain of function of mutant huntingtin.
• We are delighted to contribute to this work just out in @jneurochem.bsky.social, where we collaborate with the BlueSkyless Smillie lab to reveal that Huntington’s Disease model neurons display excess activity-dependent bulk endocytosis (ADBE).
ISN is seeking volunteers for its committees!
This is a great opportunity to contribute, connect, and help lead our global community.
🗓️ Apply by June 29

Fantastic effort from the Presynaptic Pacers, covering the slow leg from an old PI in their team at the Hairy Haggis relay!! All done to support @epilepsyinst.bsky.social!
Huge thanks to James, Jess, Zita and Angus for manning the @mmecepilepsy.bsky.social table today at the CDBS friends and family day! Great to spread the word about the amazing work the Centre is doing!
Great work Sam!!
What, what! We just published our work studying GABAB receptors in human and rat brain.

Excited for our latest work! We developed nanobinders for the luminal domain of Synaptotagmin 1 (calcium sensor for synaptic vesicles). Thanks among others to @verstrekenlab.bsky.social @opazo.bsky.social @meunierlab.bsky.social @volkerhaucke-lab.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
This would not have been possible without the heroic effort of Dr. Katherine Bonnycastle who invested years in this long-term project! Thanks also to Sarfaraz for the blots!
These models have mutations in genes exclusive to either the pre- or postsynapse, suggesting ADBE is a presynaptic homeostatic mechanism that corrects for intrinsic dysfunction in ASD neurons.
Our latest paper is out in Molecular Autism! We reveal that in neurons from five independent rat models of monogenic Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), activity-dependent endocytosis (ADBE) is selectively depressed, with no other synaptic vesicle recycling phenotype. Link to paper - rdcu.be/eh4Qa
🎉 Congrats to Sabrin Haddad - winner of the 2024 JNC Young Scientist Paper of the Year Award (in honor of Mark A. Smith)!
Her paper reveals how a CACNA2D2 mutation disrupts calcium channel & synaptic function in encephalopathy.

Edinburgh castle in the distance all lit up in purple
No sign of the aurora but at least I got to see the castle lit in purple for #epilepsy #PurpleDay ❤️

The Donlin-Asp Lab ( @pdaphd.bsky.social ) is hiring a postdoc to conduct primary research into how neurons transport mRNA to distal sites and use these mRNAs as substrates for local protein synthesis during synaptic plasticity.

New review out from our lab on SV2A! Thanks to James for all his hard work on this!
Christen was an excellent scientist who made considerable contributions to the endocytosis field. I always enjoyed our interactions and he is very sadly missed.
