A ★★★ review of The Prowler (1981) This is a serviceable (ha) slasher with good effects. The Valentine’s Day theming invites comparisons to my bloody valentine, which I have not seen.  Nonetheless a jilted lover goes on a killing spree...

A ★★★★ review of From Hell (2001) This might be the best Ripper-based film to date, although it’s a pretty far fetched take on the historical murder spree involving Freemasons, a royal child born to a prostitute, and a cover up conspi...

Basil Rathbone might be the definitive Holmes

The sequel trilogy really benefits from watching after the hype and “discourse” has run its course.

It’s good Star Wars and that’s what matters

A ★★★½ review of Shelby Oaks (2024) I held out for a while because I had seen initial reviews and was afraid this would disappoint, and I think it would have if I had watched it immediately after release. Nonetheless, it’s a good horror...

A ★★★½ review of Shutter (2008) Is it still “J-Horror” if a Thai movie set in Thailand is remade for an American audience, set in Japan, and then heavily promoted as associated with The Ring and The Grudge? I don’t know, but I reall...

A ★★★ review of Ju-on: The Grudge (2002) I’m in an odd position because I watched the American remakes first, then watched the originals. Unfortunately, I don’t feel the Ju-On series holds up considering that the same basic story is redone.

A ★★★★ review of House of Wax (1953) 1953’s House of Wax should not be confused with the 2000’s remake featuring Paris Hilton. Instead, it features the incomparable Vincent price in one of his first iconic horror roles (you could say 194...

A ★★★½ review of The Grudge 2 (2006) It’s rare for a sequel to surpass the original, and especially rare for a horror sequel to do so. The Grudge 2 somehow manages to turn its predecessors formula into a slasher with scares sprinkled in ...

A ★★★ review of The Grudge (2004) This was a pretty effective atmospheric J-horror adaption. There’s basically two names in play in that category - the grudge and the ring. I think this is the superior film, setting aside the original...

A ★★★★ review of They Live (1988) A movie that mostly consists of a man walking into public spaces and shooting seemingly-innocent people hits differently in the year of our Lord 2026, compared to what I assume the 80’s was like.  The...

A ★★ review of The Wasp Woman (1959) This might be a classic of the budget-creature-feature genre but that doesn’t mean it’s good.  This is short, to the point of being more like an extended TV episode rather than a film (66 minutes). Th...

If you like… more needful things, there’s a three-hour cut! 50% more needful, 50% more things!

Is it a better movie? No, but it is longer.

A ★★★★ review of The Wolfman (2010) (Reviewing the directors cut) This might be the coolest werewolf movie of the past two decades, although Robert eggers might shoot that record down. Nonetheless this delivers an engaging reimagining of the universal wolfman property with benicio del toro in the leading role as Lawrence Talbot, layering in a conflict between man and beast. This is definitely “would rewatch” possibly paired with the latest Frankenstein adaptation.

A ★★★½ review of The Dark (1993) This is a neat little monster movie, mostly notable for being the debut of Neve Campbell. It’s good, but sorely needs a blu-ray (or even dvd) quality distribution.

Cheap aftershave is maligned too often. The trick is showering before putting it on

3 months ago 0 0 0 0

I’m glad someone liked it! Did you see it when it came out?

I remember it was HUGE at the time (and the J-horror craze that followed) but seeing it for the first time now? I think it’s just plain slow, although it’s happily missing the later filmmaking trends like shakycam or frenetic editing.
