I am officially writing an article about Alamo Drafthouse (anti-)fandom and their buyout and anti-labor policies in the broader context of media consolidation. If you are a fan of the drafthouse, current or present employee, etc and you would be interested in speaking about this, please reach out!

Media scholars friends, if you were interviewed by a journalist about Heated Rivalry, would you drop the article link below? I am collecting articles that specifically approached academics for expert context.
It’s fun to meet up with folks at an academic conference and be like “so what’s the main crisis at your institution?”
If you missed our #SCMS26 workshop on writing in the media studies classroom - you can check out our handout complete with keywords, slides, and assignment shares! Thanks to everyone who came for a wonderful discussion (and sometimes vent session).

Starting now-ish! Come on by!
Join Aca-Media After Dark and tell the SCMS world about your work! As an extension of SCMS’s Author’s Celebration, the Aca-Media podcast invites SCMS members to the Fairmont’s Cuvee room (just off the Front Desk) from 9-10pm Wednesday for a brief chat (recorded, not live) about your recent publications!
We're helping to kick off #SCMS26 tonight -- and you can help too! Come record a short chat about any new publications with @chrisbecker.bsky.social and @stephbrown.bsky.social, and it will appear in a future episode! (If you don't arrive in time but still want to participate, just reach out.)
If you’re headed to the @scmstudies.bsky.social conference in Chicago this week, I’ve put together this feed that pulls in every post tagged with #SCMS26 to make it easy to connect and follow along!
Say hey if I’ll see you there! ✌️
It's SCMS conference week! A good time to recirculate this 2023 document: "Tips From SCMS Members for Having
a Productive and Supportive In-Person Conference" docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Strongly encourage all academics, novelists, reporters, bloggers, whatever to just email this account and state that you want to opt out of this idiocy.
Overload them with emails and make them regret they ever tried this shit.

Warning, folks: sounds like there’s a fresh wave of “book club” invites going out to academics today. Block, report, delete! guygeltner.net/blog/from-pr...
The ideal viewer of Darren Aronofsky's AI animated TV series both knows and expects less.
I wrote about this show, the future of AI filmmaking, and D.W. Griffith's wildest dream come true, for @newrepublic.com :

Apologies for our recent radio silence — times have been tough, but we’ll have a new episode very soon — and in the meantime, it’s sadly worth reposting this episode today.
Calling historians and researchers. The BBC Written Archives Centre has changed its access rules without consultation. This means an end to proper independent research into the BBC's rich history. 178 have already signed the open letter. Please join the campaign here:

teachers!
excited to share a new website at this late date of Aug 15 to try to help us collectively prepare for back to school in the interpretative humanities classroom assaulted by the AI grift, so we don't have to go it alone.

I made a piece of software! It’s called the film|minutes video|graphic workstation. It’s pretty niche but cool if you want to take notes or do very close readings of films/videos.
We’re the #2 film studies podcast! Behind only a movie discussion podcast hosted by a self-described bearded viking luchador w/a whopping 770 eps, so we’re very honored to share that podium along with #3 @petecant.bsky.social's newbooksnetwork.bsky.social

Eric Hoyt wrapped the panel by recording his own love tape, and expressing his feelings about the NEH.
In the spirit of Wendy Clarke’s work, he’d like for it to be shared widely and seen by as many people as possible.

As #scms25 approaches (first of the post-twitter era!), feel free to follow this conference feed in Bluesky to track the discourse:
One of our sponsored panels, Session L6, "Rewinding Tape Across Media: Archives of Ambivalence (A RoundTaple)," Saturday 11am, will be dedicated as a tribute to Jonathan Sterne, a space for SCMS members to reflect on what he has meant to them and to our field.
Adding to the remembrances of Linda Williams' invaluable work, listen to her incredible keynote address from the 2013 SCMS conference here (mp3 download link) aca-media.org/s/LindaWilli...

Bill Siemering, after reading from NPR’s original mission statement, which he authored: The idea that people need to be informed is fundamental for us to survive as a democracy. We have to have intelligent citizens. I might say that now, one of the dangers of our country’s democracy is so much public ignorance in our society. Now some people might argue that, well, a journalistic enterprise shouldn’t be that kind of thing, but I was believing that this is more than just a passive transmitter of the news of the day, that it has a larger mission than that.
Someone requested a transcript for the @aca-media.bsky.social episode featuring NPR's founding program director Bill Siemering, and putting that together offered a very profound listen/read right now. aca-media.org/aapbep6notes
