🚀 Just 5 days left to apply!
We’re hiring — and we’d love for you to join our team. If you’re passionate about AI, health and infection research, this is your moment to start an independent junior research group at HZI in one of Europe's most research-rich regions.
⏰ Deadline: March 30
Nearly every baby is colonized by various E. coli at birth, but luckily only 1 in 1000 develops a severe infection: A new paper in Nature shows how maternal IgG specific to mum`s gut E.coli protects neonates.

Most vaccines are designed to protect against a single pathogen - this new study proposes a different concept: mucosal vaccination providing broad protection against multiple respiratory pathogens.

set out to map T cell dynamics in the neonatal liver—what a ride. A genuinely collaborative effort, and a special shout-out to Mathias W. Hornef for outstanding mentorship.

For our #flowcytometry peeps, would you like to have a single fix/perm protocol that is optimised for everything? One that preserves fluorophores while allowing simultaneous TF and cytokine staining? How about 100-fold cheaper?
You got it:

I have started my own group over a year ago and it has been an exciting journey. I am greatful to my mentor Mathias Hornef from whom I learned so much to prepare me for this. It was a pleasure to reconnect for the SMI oral history project and reflect on the science on neonatal mucosal immunity.
Congrats!
Does this imply we are not to ingest novel foods during infection?
Consider attending #EMIG2025 in Aachen!
This meeting offers an excellent platform for students and postdocs to build their professional network in mucosal immunology.
