The problem is that the real, "proper" uses of the things (mostly scientific models) are not "flashy" enough for the general populous. I saw a brilliant comment once that a lot of AI advertising is trying to make you think that you are more helpless than you actually are and invent you a problem.
Isn't it nice how all those people whose lives are not being affected in the negative way by gen-AI due to their material status are trying to convince everyone to "get over it"? Funny how this works.

I love making theories (it is one of the way for my neurodivergent-ass brain to cope with reality), I have written a lot of them as the part of my job, but man... keeping some distance to your own fan-work and creations is a really important skill, that I wish I had way earlier. It truly helps.
Instead of using theories as fun or intellectual excercise, some people have started to have that "all or nothing" attitude about them and expectations on promises that were never made. And when unfulfilled, it often spirals into excusing some bad behavior and saying that they're "just passionate".
I think the point you made connects to a wider issue that becomes the bane of every fandom: taking oneself way too seriously. Instead of treating pieces of media for what they are, we tend to position them at the center of our lives, becoming extremely possessive about the characters and themes.

Fallout is, generally, pretty blunt about its storytelling. That's part of the charm, that's why stuff like Dead Money in NV is a nice contrast. Despite what Avellone says (and the guy wrote a lot of good shit, INCLUDING DM don't get me wrong), the Theme Park feeling was also pretty strong in F2.
Fallout 2 fans that never actually finished the game, trying to tell everyone about the "subtle storytelling" are my new favourite new genre of Fallout fans.
