New article @lancetgh.bsky.social: 3mil people with TB go undiagnosed
Im addition to tongue swabs, meet two more breakthrough diagnostics:
🫀 AI-assisted lung ultrasound
🧬 CRISPR-based testing
But, continued funding cuts will result in additional TB cases and excess deaths. We need action now!

At CLIME, science drives everything we do - especially in the fight against tuberculosis.
Because behind every dataset, discovery, and collaboration is one goal: better health for all.
🔬 Today (and every day), we stand with science.

World Health Day 2026 🌍🩺
This year’s message from the World Health Organization is simple: stand with science.
That means trusting evidence, supporting research, and recognising the role science plays in protecting health worldwide.
Prof Grant Theron presented CLIME’s latest innovations in TB diagnostics and infectiousness at @samrcza.bsky.social World TB Day Symposium. New tools for finding infectious cases, detecting drug resistance, and those needing prevention are NB steps toward ending TB. #WorldTBDay #TB #Research
This Human Rights Month, we honour those who fought for freedom and those building a more just South Africa today.
30 years into our Constitution, dignity, equality, and freedom are values we must live daily.

🧬 Part 2 - Whether you need high-volume lab testing or rapid point-of-care diagnostics, there’s now a @who.int -recommended molecular test that works with tongue swabs!
Check out CLIMEs publications related to these recommendations: lnkd.in/dgkYqF46
@who.int just endorsed tongue swabs for TB testing when sputum can’t be obtained allowing more accessible, more patient-friendly diagnosis. 👏 Proud that CLIME research contributed to the evidence behind this decision. Part 2 coming soon! 🔬
Today we celebrate the women powering the science at CLIME 🔬✨ From the lab to the clinic, our team of scientists, coordinators and trainees are pushing boundaries, mentoring the next generation, and advancing research that makes a real difference. 💜 #InternationalWomensDay #WomenInScience #CLIME
Stored serum can reliably be used for CRP-based TB screening. Researchers found strong agreement with fingerprick tests on LumiraDx — a simple shift with meaningful impact.

Rouxjeane Venter, of CLIME recently co-authored an editorial with @tomayates.bsky.social and @drjesspotter.bsky.social , which unpacks the vast progress made in the fight against drug-resistant TB and highlights why these gains are now at risk! @ucl.ac.uk
✨ Meet the CLIME Postdocs ✨
Our postdoctoral researchers drive innovation, mentorship, and impact at CLIME. This is what they have to say about their research!
Can TB be detected from the air we breathe out? 🌬️🫁
Yes! This study shows how a small device (THOR) can detect infectious TB cases that sputum tests may miss 🔍

Kicking off CAD LUS4TB-a new Africa–Europe collaboration using AI and portable ultrasound to improve TB diagnosis.
The project will evaluate an AI algorithm that reads handheld ultrasound images via smartphone, supporting rapid TB rule-out in primary care in Benin, Mali and South Africa!
Millions of people with TB go undiagnosed because they can’t produce sputum.
Our new study shows oral washes and tongue swabs tested with Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra can detect TB even without sputum — a simple, scalable way to close the diagnostic gap.
