I love teaching that text along with Mumford on authoritarian vs democratic technics, and they're both so old! Key idea for me: What types of political arrangements does modern technology allow for? I find the whole discussion on tech characteristics and political form very generative (130-133)
Futures After Progress - from Baltimore to the world! Listen for a teaser of this powerful read and a timely conversation with @chloeahmann.bsky.social on toxicity, politics, and the possible futures of our pasts 🌱

Isn't this a major source of tension in academic departments in the US? I don't understand why salaries aren't standardized across years of service/ranking. I think it's a way to keep us in competition and break solidarity between faculty. and it works.
what inspiring books from the 90s' anti-globalization movement should we be reading now to make sense of the political power of big tech, if any?
Apply to participate in a learning community with other academics and practitioners! We are seeking paper as well as hands-on project submissions or apply to be a collaborator.
📢Exciting News!

I’ve tried to put together a non-exhaustive list of anthropologists on bluesky together. Did I miss anyone? Should I add you? go.bsky.app/GYEM3YK #anthropology #anthrosky
I started STS scholars (broadly construed) starter pack!
It's VERY incomplete! I wasn’t sure if there was an easier way to do this than just going through my followers & adding people. Probably missed lots of folks!
Please let me know who I missed or if you'd like to be added.

Hector Beltran on the figure of the monstrous translator + collaborative Q&A vibes 🙌
Veronica Uribe on when interlocutors expect you to be doing different work; Sareeta Amrute cautioning for deficit narratives, local needs, and internal power asymmetries; Ambar Reyes on solidarities across different Souths and social organizing as a form of tech;
highlights to remember: LF Murillo on the cannibal and the cyborg; Ayo Okunseinde on alternative Afrofuturisms and pedagogical difficulties; Kim Fernandes on the South as an amorphous blob that hides our commitments; L Gil looking for my community of responsibility across places and languages;
2023 AAA Roundtable: Tech from the South as Method and Challenge. exhausted but thrilled. first time organizing something like this and the energy was great. what a cool group @vuribede.bsky.social and I put together 🌟
Please read and circulate this editorial by editors of the journal History and Technology, Amy Slaton and and Tiago Saraiva, which fully vindicates my STS (UCL) colleague Jenny Bulstrode and her paper 'Black metallurgists and the making of the industrial revolution'
