What Was The First Story You Heard About Autism?
An exploration of the stories we hear about autism and what they mean to Autistic people.
While UK is proposing to narrow diagnoses (!), our new study led by @isaacahuvia.bsky.social: adults w/ self-identified autism had more unmet needs & higher distress, & similar understanding of autism, than officially diagnosed peers. Most wanted formal diagnosis journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

1/ On health inequalities for autistic people the @hlautismactcom.parliament.uk report credited the success of the Oliver McGowan Training to coproduction and delivery, but still many autistic people struggle to access healthcare.
Representatives of autistic-led organisations giving evidence to Holyroodâs health, social care and sport committee said a national plan is needed to fix significant gaps in neurodevelopmental pathways: healthandcare.scot/stories/4295...
Screenshot of Guardian comment piece: Horror movies have an ableism problem. Isnât it time we found new âmonstersâ? by Kathryn Bromwich. Films such as Frankenstein still use disability as shorthand for moral depravity. But human behaviour is far scarier than human appearance
This was a painful piece to write. I love horror, but it doesnât always love me back. I wish I didnât have to write this, but it keeps happening, often from people who should know better
Tl;dr: we need more disabled writers/directors so we can tell our own stories đ Please share
@autisticrealms.bsky.social this is my recommendation!
This is possibly THE best video about stimming I have ever seen by Sophie Broadgate. I have shared quite a lot over the past few years but may be not shared here... enjoy!

Not every autistic person has the ability or capacity to be a "contributing member of society," and that is OK. We are all interdependent, we all depend on each otherâsome more, some less. That's how society should function, ideally. #neurodiversity #disability #autism

Illustration for The Sociological Review magazine's September 2025 issue. Whimsical drawing of three anthropomorphic flowers â orange, green and black against a brown and cream background â protesting together. One holds a black flag, another shouts through a megaphone, and the third listens intently with blue sound waves connecting them. Artist: Raquel Figueira
âQuite often, big social theorists actually formed their ideas in social movements, or in radical or activist spaces â what sociologists call counter-public spheres.â

BREAKING đ¨
The updated EHRC Code of Practice has now been sent to the Government. The Code is just as bad as we feared.
It would mean a mandatory trans bathroom ban, and trans people's exclusion from public life. The impact would be devastating.
But politicians still have time to stop this.

I am sickened by the relentless demonisation of refugees.
No refugee underfunded a school.
No refugee closed a hospital.
No refugee took away support from the sick and disabled.
We need solutions not scapegoats. Stop blaming refugees and tax the rich instead!
We are now accepting expressions of interest for our September 2025 - March 2026 Discovery Programme cohorts!
