America isn't exceptional — it's the exception America has self-importance in abundance. What it lacks is the data to back it up.

In many of the ways we measure 'the good life' — health, work-life balance, faith in government — the US is falling short. And not just a little bit. Over and over, data show it performing substantially worse than similar countries.

I call it the American Outlier.

As we get into the final parts of the amazing meeting that #TIBS2026 was, a reminder to follow and share the starter pack for ECRs in Biogeography:
go.bsky.app/KvnmdnK

And a reminder to check it again, as we've had many new additions over the conference.

See you all at the dinner!

Or the other way around. Both narratives are valid. The question really is what do we value. Nature? Then some habitats need active protection from us. We can't simply use a laizzes-faire approach in those cases :)

Plantations of alien trees aren't great. Period. Plenty of research says otherwise. That said, contrasting the understory it's not necessarily shows that - temperate rainforest are wet and have a lush understory, not so dry, acidic forests

The surging price tag of wildfires, in one chart

Wildfires are getting worse — and a lot more expensive for the rest of us.

🏵️ Today's #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Broussonetia papyrifera, the Paper Mulberry.
🌲 This plant is a swift coloniser of disturbed areas, including forests.
🍂 It can form extensive, dense stands through spreading root systems, and its pollen is highly allergenic.

Tasmanian leaders struggle with a basic fact: environment laws should protect the environment | Clear Air Nature in Australia’s smallest state is in poor health, but this has been largely ignored by both major parties in the lead-up to the early state election

Australia’s smallest state, Tazmania, is marketed as “clean and green”, despite allowing the destruction of remaining rainforests and a whole raft of other environmentally devastating activities.

Why does this sound so familiar?

It could be practiced during the months of reproduction and nesting of birds (when it is now prohibited), in state-owned areas (including beaches), with decoy birds, and much more:

🌸Plant diversity dynamics over space and time in a warming Arctic 🌸

Our new study @nature.com analysed plant diversity change in >2000 tundra plots over 4 decades. We found that plants changed unevenly, mostly driven by warming and biotic interactions.
