Forest Service Will Close Research Stations That Study Wildfire Risk Scientists say their work on fires and climate change could be lost as the agency moves its headquarters to Utah from Washington and shuts 57 research stations.

The U.S. Forest Service is closing 57 of its 77 research facilities in 31 states under a reorganization plan announced this week, threatening science that looked at how wildfires, drought, pests and global warming are putting pressure on forests.

Hearing from folks! I know the FS has barred employees from talking to the press. I can keep your name and identifying details out of my story—won't publish anything without explicit ok.

Seems equally important I talk to researchers working with the FS, who can talk about what we stand to lose...

Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request to Congress

I am shocked to see this language from the NSF.

“The U.S. National Science Foundation's Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request reflects a strategic alignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment while eliminating woke and weaponized grant programs that previously funded radical DEI projects.”

SFS Response Letter on Changes to Waters of the U.S. Definition | Society for Freshwater Science December 30, 2025 — The Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) today released a letter outlining changes to the Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) definition and our response.

The EPA has announced changes to the definition of Waters of the U.S. that leave critical systems supporting drinking water, floodwater storage, and biodiversity unprotected. Public comments on the changes are open until January 5, 2026.

Time to get your public comments in on the proposed Waters of the U.S. rule that would strip protections for countless wetlands and streams.

Trout unlimited has a tool on their page that will automatically send your message to the EPA as well as your representatives:

EPA tells scientists to stop publishing studies, employees say Staff from the EPA’s Office of Water were summoned to a town hall meeting this week and told to pause the publication of most research, pending a review.

EPA has ordered scientists in its Office of Water to immediately pause almost all research & stop publishing studies. Researchers were told that, unless scientific journals had already returned proofs, studies will be subject to an additional EPA review.

One year’s worth of rain in 24 hours in China.

Here in NJ, we just had a 10-minute rainstorm so intense that it downed trees and power lines and flooded streets immediately.

Being Too Helpful At Work Can Hurt Your Career—Here’s How To Say No Women are more likely to take on behind-the-scenes duties at work—extra tasks like onboarding or event planning—and it's hurting their careers. Here's how to say no.

In a study of professors, women got 378 new work requests over 4 weeks vs 118 for men. Women spent more time on service, advising & teaching; men on research. Orgs should track who is taking extra duties & ensure they are rewarded and distributed fairly. www.forbes.com/sites/kimels...
