Disasterous choice by ALA

@amlibraryassoc.bsky.social you want to explain why during a time of unprecedented threat to libraries you laid off our long serving OIF director Deborah Caldwell Stone?

Seriously: what is the strategy here? Are you TRYING to weaken us? 🤬

This is literally the worst time to lose Deborah Caldwell Stone. We need all the intellectual freedom support we can get. What the actual fuck indeed.

Excuse me what now

Thank YOU for closing out the conference with a bang! I will be thinking about how to incorporate thoughts about data citizenship into my info lit classes with first year students for the next few months. As you said, education is the way. 😊

I had a wonderful time at #LILAC25! I learned so much from all the wonderful presentations AND got to meet so many lovely people. @elinorcarmi.bsky.social was right: lilac has a kinder vibe than other conferences. Fingers crossed I get to attend again soon! ❤️ to all and THANK YOU to the organizers!!

You don’t have to be a librarian to report attempted book banning in your community. Don’t assume that somebody else has done it. Don’t worry that it will be a duplicate report; the ALA OIF will sort that out. Silence is complicity. Report book challenges!

Anyway I’m sure people more involved in the fandom and book communities have more incisive takes, but this has been on my mind all day. At least when a Hollywood mogul is revealed to be evil, no one ever assumed him to be kind. 5/5

But that’s the thing— he always seemed so genuine. I wish we knew where the line was drawn between his outward persona and the awfulness inside. Was it all an act? Or is he *somehow* both a genuinely kind man and someone who has the capacity to hurt vulnerable women in such terrible ways? 4/?

At both events, gaiman was effortlessly charming. He didn’t seem to be trying at all. If he had been a little more slick or a little more glib, this news of his true nature maybe wouldn’t have come as so much of a shock. Like, “aha! we KNEW he was too smooth to be genuine!” 3/?

Plus there is a child involved!

But it wasn’t just the facts presented. I was never a gaiman super fan, but I did go to two events where he was a featured speaker. At one event, I stood in line with a friend who wanted his autograph. 2/?

@lilashapiro.bsky.social’s neil gaiman article troubled me deeply. Part of the reason why is obvious— gaiman’s abuse of those women was nothing less than monstrous, and reading about how Amanda Palmer enabled his abuse while also financially mistreating at least one woman was enraging. 1/?

Wild how her first response when she heard their son was present while gaiman was abusing that poor woman was “well did he have headphones on??”

I met Neil gaiman v briefly at a reading years ago. He was exactly as the article said: charming, adorably awkward. I remember the crowd (mostly young women) cheered when he asked the ppl in line to allow a woman with a cane to go first. Truly boggles the mind how monsters can hide in plain sight.

Today I had to go to the DMV. I also have a cold. Boo. The DMV lady thanked me for wearing a mask when I was clearly sick. But there were SO MANY other people there who were also sneezing/coughing and NOT wearing masks.

Have we learned NOTHING?
If you are sick, wear a mask! Protect others!

My dad was a Master & Commander dad. We must’ve watched it ten times together over holiday breaks. Sometimes I would come home and he would already have it on, waiting. He died three years ago. I still haven’t been able to watch M&C. 💔 Enjoy every discussion, save every voicemail, savor every hug!
