2027 Women's Tour de France to spend two days criss-crossing the Peak District. Yay!
Whoop! They've announced the TdFF route for next year! Not quite past my house but might have to figure a viewing strategy out...
Spending a morning preparing ideas, thoughts, materials and slides for a training session I'm delivering next week.
It will be a half-hour session. But it takes a full morning to prepare everything, a week in advance.
text reads, 'heat from traffic is contributing to rise in city temperatures, new study finds'
Scientists at The University of Manchester have developed a new way to measure how traffic contributes to rising urban temperatures, revealing that everyday vehicle use can play a measurable role in making cities warmer.

A careful read of the details in this thread will show that the issue was actually nothing to do with the standard of the patient's English, sadly. No interpreter was needed in this particular case. Just a kinder doctor.
The application has remained stable since approximately 9 PM PDT, April 16 despite ongoing Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. We have not seen any evidence of unauthorized access to private user data. We will provide a further update by end of day.
Great to see the "Translate in...." series of high-end translation workshops will be held in Dublin this July. 8-10 July 2026.
I really enjoyed the "Translate in Cambridge" workshop a few years ago. "Translate in Dublin / "On traduit à Dublin"

Looks like disruption to trains in and out of Manchester Piccadilly station will persist throughout today (Friday). This is after an Avanti train yesterday appears to have brought down overhead electric cables.
Major disruption to / from #Manchester Piccadilly expected until the end of the day
I'll keep an eye out for Auntie Mabel there (obscure "Derek and Clive" reference)
Linquists' Voices CIOL And we need to hear. share and respect the views of those Translators who prefer not to use AI... "Thank you, but I'll stick to resistance." "Responsible use of Al in translation means do not use it." Not using Al does wonders for environmental impact, copyright considerations, privacy and confidentiality, as well as the quality of your work. This method has been 100% tested and approved by myself and every translators who does not use Al." And we need to continue to highlight that for the spoken word and interpreting - especially in PSI and high stakes contexts - all the evidence shows Al is a long way from being ready to deploy or reliable.
Gosh, BlueSky is having a difficult day today!
Welcome back, Bluesky. I hope you enjoyed your morning off.
German pillows aren't something you talk about. They're simply a shared experience. The Eastern Front of soft furnishings.
The kind of thing people gather in a smoke-filled, cash-only bar to whisper supportively about. While drinking pilsner stiffened by a little glass of schnapps.

Doing a basic calculation using a chatbot instead of a calculator uses between 2.5 million and 62 million times more energy. And using chatbots for calculations is *extremely common* - the companies have marketed these systems as general purpose, everything-apps!

May JD Vance throw his support behind your enemies. God bless.
MVDP riding the cobbles of Carrefour de l’Arbre. In the background you see a group of guys cheering him on with gusto, and there is a helicopter in the sky that’s filming.

I'm interested in where the UK sits in that scale, @simongerman600.bsky.social Do you have reliable figures? Does UK also lag behind EU average wages? Office of National Statistics figures seem to suggest UK mean annual salary is around £38k, but I'd be interested in your view.

A map of Manchester, roughly the area within the M60 ring. Road deaths are marked with little black markers. There are a lot of them.
Here’s a map of road deaths in Manchester since 2020… every single one an unacceptable loss of human life. And preventable.
The council and mayor may have adopted a “Vision Zero” strategy, but it actually needs implementing. Otherwise it’s just nice words and continuing death and injury.

Settling down for a day at the translation coalface. I'm translating a German user manual for a conveying system this week.
I see the price of a postage stamp has gone up (again!) in the UK. Now £1.80 for a 1st class stamp, 91p for 2nd class.
That made me look back at this chart of postage prices from the 80s and 90s:
