See, it isn’t that hard to be staunchly pro EU and win elections against nihilism and extremism.

“Climate change will not lead to humanity’s demise” - Bill Gates.

Yes. But so are a regional nuclear war, airborne Ebola and a Tungaska event over a populated area. And all require major efforts to prevent major human suffering.

How to pass a green law in an anti-green age in 6 easy steps A Slovak liberal quietly steered one of the last surviving environmental files to the finish line.

As the EU (and the wider world) tears up its climate legislation, here's an interesting case study of how one MEP managed to get a new environmental law passed in the European Parliament this week against the odds.

Escalate to negotiate: How Europe should respond to Chinese export restrictions Beijing is turning its rare earth monopoly into a weapon. The EU needs to treat this as the emergency that it is and unleash its anti-coercion shield to bring China to the negotiating table…

A qualified majority of member states must agree that the EU is being subjected to economic coercion. If China’s recent actions do not meet that threshold, it is hard to imagine what ever will, write @jankaoertel.bsky.social and @tobiasgehrke.bsky.social @ecfrasia.bsky.social

Europe Needs A Public Investment Revolution To Secure Its Economic Future Boosting infrastructure spending would stimulate growth and employment without threatening debt sustainability.

On the macroeconomic dividend of public investment:

🙏 "Each euro of public investment generates approximately €1.30 in inflation-adjusted output within three years—a cumulative multiplier of 1.3."

The most interesting element is the support of EU supply chains eg. Bringing opportunities for low CO2 steel, aluminium, polymers. Similar instrument can be considered for other green EU consumer goods eg heatpumps.

The new Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission has delivered its first images, highlighting concentrations of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. Despite being preliminary, these images mark a major milestone in Europe’s ability to monitor air quality all the way from geostationary orbit, 36 000 kilometres above Earth.

This image depicts tropospheric nitrogen dioxide with clear pollution hotspots visible along the Mediterranean coast and over Italy’s Po Valley.

This image presents a vertical column density of sulphur dioxide. A distinct plume can be seen emerging from Mount Etna in Italy and drifting south-eastwards over the sea. Although Etna is currently relatively calm, much larger plumes are typically observed during periods of heightened volcanic activity.

In addition to natural emissions from volcanoes, sulphur dioxide is also released through human activities, particularly from ships burning high-sulphur fuels and power plants using brown coal.

This image shows a vertical column of ozone. While ozone high up in the stratosphere plays a crucial role in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, ozone in the lower atmosphere acts as a pollutant, contributing to poor air quality and respiratory problems.

The overall ozone levels here are within the expected range.

This image of Europe and part of North Africa is based on the first Earth radiance spectra measured by Sentinel-4. The false-colour image, generated by assigning the signals in specific spectral ranges to red, green and blue, shows the land, ocean and clouds as expected.

Mosquitoes found in Iceland for first time as climate crisis warms country Three specimens discovered in what was previously one of the only places in the world without the insects Mosquitoes have been found in Iceland for the first time as global heating makes the country more hospitable for insects. The country was until this month one of the only places in the world that did not have a mosquito population. The other is Antarctica. Continue reading...

Good news: The awareness for industrial heat electrification is rising.

More than 90% of industrial firms already consider heat electrification for their company according to a recent McKinsey survey presented by Godart van Gendt at Thermal Energy Day.

In parallel, Europe desperately needs to build its own REE capacity - mining and refining.

It can’t rely only on a G7 pathway because the US can’t be trusted.

But securing REE from China with some of the bargaining chips we have is useful to buy time.

Carbon credits are failing to help with climate change — here’s why The idea that emissions can be offset through projects that claim to avoid releases or to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is fatally flawed.

Carbon offsets, though widely used, often fail to deliver real emission cuts. They undermine global climate goals by enabling polluters to avoid reducing fossil-fuel use.
