Struggling with grad school...my advisor wants a road map for proposal to thesis in 2yrs. I barely know what im eating for breakfast tomorrow... 😩 I just dont want to disappoint her. I always feel too stupid to be a graduate student and it seems like as days go it just proves true #masters #lost

Thanks to @dmennill.bsky.social & dozens of other fantastic colleagues, the International Master of Bioacoustics MOBI at the Univ of St-Etienne is a very unique training program (and so cheap compared to overseas - 1400 € for the whole year!). Info here: www.masterofbioacoustics.com

Love seeing baby turkey vultures. It sucks they are in rehab but still cute.

Department of Defense Security for the Protection of Department of Homeland Security Functions MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF DEFENSE                THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

There is no bigger story right now than the White House asserting that California residents are in a state "of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States."

Last day of the academic year, first day of placing ARUs to record bat activity in new locations. Could be worse things to do on a Friday even if it did involve driving 6hrs.

Is it normal for anyone else to show their grad advisor class projects and feel giddy when they seem to appreciate the work? ...is this a thing people do? Help a first gen student avoid being awkward lol

It feels weird to be excluded from something right in front of my face and be the only one in a large group who was, not that anyone noticed. At times, I actually think that maybe I fit in, but clearly, Im more or less on my own. Never realized that didn't end in grade school.

You can now upload soundscapes to eBird! Upload your wetland ambiances full of birdsong.

@xeno-canto.bsky.social has supported this since 2013 — now eBird joins in.

It’s a great way to capture the acoustic atmosphere. Valuable for researchers. When does @observation.org join? #bioacoustics #bird

A male Northern Harrier in quartering flight with its beak pointed towards the ground so that it can listen for prey.

A figure from our paper showing:
left: scatterplots of auditory nuclei size against brainstem volume for 9 species of hawks, including harriers. In both plots, the harriers have much larger volumes than what is expected based on their brainstem volume.
middle: photos of sections taken through auditory brain nuclei of the Northern Harrier
right: photos of sections taken through the auditory brain nuclei of a Cooper's hawk

New paper out from our lab today!

@evolsara.bsky.social shows that harriers have expanded their auditory nuclei in a similar way to owls to enable them to calculate the position of prey by sound.

Its early for #featheredfriday but I was so excited to find out I got a lifer today! I noticed a few warblers fluttering around near the ground in the invasive honeysuckle, they turned out to be palm warblers from what other birders have told me.

A barred owl sits on the branch of a magnolia tree at the center of the photo. Its eyes are mostly closed and its breast feathers are being gently blown by a breeze. The background is filled with blue sky and blooming pink magnolia flowers, with little bits of sunlight peeking through.

I feel obligated to share this photo I took today because, well, look at it. How could a sleepy barred owl sitting in a blooming magnolia tree on a sunny spring day not bring you some joy?

"Virgil Bean" the young, campus barred owl was stalking a tree full of fox squirrel nests with active juvenile fox squirrels in it. This youngish bird, thinking yearling, has been spotted almost daily for several weeks around my building.

A faux vintage comic book cover for "Pyroptera: The strong independent batwoman who don’t need no batman!" featuring a young woman transforming into a werebat against a dark city skyline dotted with lights. The transformation is shown in three stages: on the left, a frustrated young woman grimaces, saying, "Man, why do I feel so damn flighty tonight?" In the center, her body transforms—clothing tears, bat wings erupt from her arms, fur sprouts across her skin, and her facial features contort into a fierce snarl. On the left, her final form: a towering, snarling, gleeful werebat woman with glowing eyes, sharp claws, and outstretched leathery wings. At the bottom right, the issue's title: "Bat Out of Her Shell."

"Pyroptera" means "fire wing," and when this werebat lady is on the prowl, I think you'll find she is very fiery indeed.

Back from Indiana and the #bats conference. Such a good meeting! Also before driving 8+ hours back, I did a little hiking in a marsh area and got to watch some interesting wildlife, including this somewhat hostile interaction between a mute and trumpeter swan. #birds 🪶
