I'm a biologist. Here's why I wrote about U.S. history (1929-1939) I was one of those Mexican American elementary school children in California who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s not knowing about the deportation or forced expulsion of 350,000-500,000 people of Mexic...

I wrote my first blog about why I felt that writing about my family's experiences with the mass deportation of people of Mexican descent during the Great Depression was more important than the National Science Foundation grant I was writing last summer. communities.springernature.com/posts/i-m-a-...

Ecological interactions and genomic innovation fueled the evolution of ray-finned fish endothermy Cetacean interactions, body size, and genomic innovations shaped endothermy evolution in ray-finned fishes in the Eocene-Miocene.

Evolution of endothermy in marine fishes is related to competition with cetaceans. This incredible paper is a masterpiece of phylogenetic comparative methods and a future classic for marine biologists

Evolutionary lability of a key innovation spurs rapid diversification - Nature A study shows that the rapid diversification of cichlids in African lakes is driven by their ability to evolve between having simple or complex teeth.

1/10 *** New paper out *** (on behalf of Nick Peoples who is not on Bluesky). I am beyond excited to present our new paper out now in @Nature! Here, we show that rapid gain and loss of tooth complexity accelerates diversification in fishes! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Just your odd mix of Indian and Malagasy cichlids. Reminds me of the line in Pirates of the Caribbean “the world is still the same, there is just less in it” tilapia have nearly replaced all Malagasy cichlids in it’s native home

The elongate tail of a ray

The elongate tail of a ray

What is the function of the elongate tail in elasmobranch #rays? A 🧵 and a new hypothesis. A paper with @juliachaumel.bsky.social in @royalsociety.org Proceedings B (shorturl.at/PmfYD) shows that the tail of cownose rays (and a few other species studied so far) has an elaborate lateral line.

Iris growing tendrils that meet in the middle, forming an upper and lower pupil. Note the shadow of lower pupil reflected in the water. There is a dark band of melanin pigmentation at the water line across the iris tendrils as well with shades of green in the skin around the eye.

Two four-eyed fish swimming side by side. They are positively buoyant - floating with just their eyes and tips of their snouts above the water like adorable crocodiles.

I just need to share these photos of our four-eyed fish #Anableps anableps I took yesterday in our fish room.
15/10 one of the best fishes 😍

Pac-Man looking Bathophilus brevis

Came across this glorious Pac-Man impersonator, Bathophilus brevis, while measuring fishes at the Scripps collection with @lizmillermacroevo.bsky.social. It just decided that all it needed in life was a huge mouth and a tail 😂

Very cool! @frable.bsky.social agrees that it’s a juvenile fangtooth. Didn’t recognize it without the fangs!

Maybe a juvenile melamphaid?

Awesome haul!! Do you know what the little two-horned fish is? It’s got some familiar traits, but I can’t quite put my finger on it!

Super proud of my 2nd PhD paper exploring shifts in evo. integration among reef fish fins with expansions in locomotor modes, out now in Evolution. Within modes there is much diversity in fin shape and weak connections between form and function. doi.org/10.1093/evol...
