*demanned, not remanned!

The Island was supplied by the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service. The lighthouse was automated and remanned in 1976, and is today solar powered. We did climb to the balcony.
It is. In the past access was via ship, then transfer from a tender to a basket suspended from a flying fox that took you to a landing stage about 30m above sea level. From there the haulage system took you up the sheer cliffs to the relatively flat island plateau
A bit windswept, but I was finally able to visit Tasman Island thanks to the Friends of Tasman Island, Rotary Tasmania, Parks and Wildlife and AMSA. The 120th anniversary of the lighthouse is on April 2nd. #lighthousesofaustralia #lighthouse
A visit to "the smallest working lighthouse in the world," the 5m (16') tall North Queensferry Harbour #Lighthouse, built in 1817 by the renowned Scottish civil engineer Robert Stevenson (grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson).

www.cockatooisland.gov.au/en/whats-on/... Cockatoo Island open day is on this Sunday- the perfect opportunity to explore the island and learn about its maritime heritage. I’ll be speaking about RMS Queen Mary’s conversion to HMT Queen Mary in World War 2. #maritimehistory
A white tower rises from a white stone building. Two figures, perhaps a woman and a child, are walking past. Other white buildings are in the background. The sky is a clear blue. The color scheme suggests the intense sunlight, to the extent that the buildings are almost washed out.

A portion of a recent #PBS broadcast telling the story of women #lighthouse keepers in the US. Hundreds of women have served at the country's lighthouses over the years; around 200 of them have been primary keepers.

Although this is a gorgeous sunny day in Dorset, whenever I see depopulated seascapes with groynes I have a delicious frisson of fear thinking of M.R. James’s Sussex seaside stories . A solitary figure wearing fluttery white in the distance would fit right in…
Were Olympic and Titanic badly-built ships, suffering from intrinsic weaknesses because of carelessness or conspiracy? Find the answers in this week's episode.

A two-story wooden house with gabled windows and a mansard roof stands on a large masonry foundation. A short square tower topped with an iron lantern and a surrounding walkway rises from the front section of the roof. People are standing inside the lantern room and on the walkway. A US flag flies from a pole to the left of the lighthouse. A high bridge with cars driving back and forth is in the background, and the calm, deep-blue water of the harbor is in the foreground. The sky is mostly cloudy, with patches of blue.
A joint project by the Rose Island #Lighthouse (👇) and the Fort Hamilton Trust in #RhodeIsland is studying the island's environmental, maritime, military, and #Indigenous history; exhibits will be held starting in September.

My sister is an archaeologist. The biggest fan of her profession is her cat - apparently post-excavation boots are ambrosia for felines #archaeology #justcatthings

This exhibition unlocked memories of the stories my father told me about the night the attack happened. He heard a distant rumbling and explosions he thought were thunder, but his father - a World War 1 vet - told him “that’s not thunder.” #navalhistory #maritimehistory
