71% of our planet is ocean, but you wouldn’t know it from traditional maps.

Shift your land-based perspective this Earth Week with a story about the Spilhaus Projection map and the WHOI oceanographer who created it: go.whoi.edu/spilhausmap

'A simple (perfect) life' - my spring landscape is finally finished! An apple orchard in bloom, old railway, sheep with their lambs and an allotment being prepared for growing :) Zoom in to see all the other tiny details too... I think this might be my favourite aerial embroidery I've ever done!

...map libraries may hold more “only known copy” of published works per square foot than their institutions’ special collections departments...

Above quote reminds me of Ed Dahl’s statement…

The richest appreciation one can have of a map is to know what prompted that conscious decision to put it there.

The institutional vapor trails that placed a map on a particular floor in a given cabinet drawer.

… a map's journey into the archive can be just as eventful and reflective of history as the intended use the map was put to… It's an important part of the story, not least because it reveals how the Map Library came into existence (James Cheshire - The Library of Lost Maps). A great read!!

Archives are
neither dusty
nor old stuff
neither dead
nor boring.

Archives are what we make of them.
Each generation, each of us sees diferent things in an item.
Each of us adds something new every time we engage.
Each item in the archives is the sum of all these interactions.
