For the third time in two weeks someone, rumored to be the same person, came through and shot up 75th street, just a few minutes before the kids were getting out of school. The school had to be put on lock down. The street had to be blocked off for police and ambulance, making it impossible for the kids to get to us the way they do after school each day. Let me be clear: What happened yesterday is UNACCEPTABLE!!!! We're asking whomever the shooter(s) may be, to please STOP. WE DON'T WANT TO FIGHT YOU. WE DON'T HAVE GUNS. BUT WE HAVE TO PROTECT OUR KIDS AND THEIR RIGHT TO SURVIVE. THE KIDS NEED TO EAT EVERYDAY. THEY NEED SAFETY. THEY NEED TO GROW UP BETTER THAN THE LAST GENERATION DID. WE DON'T WANT THEM TO GROW UP TO BE KILLERS OR THE ONES GETTING KILLED. THIS SH*T IS NOT NORMAL. THIS IS NOT THE WAY OUR COMMUNITY IS SUPPOSED TO OPERATE OR HOW WE'RE SUPPOSED TO LIVE. WE'RE SUPPOSED TO LIVE IN PEACE, TOO. AND RIGHT NOW THE ONES WHO ARE COMING THROUGH SHOOTING ARE TAKING THAT FROM THE KIDS AND FROM ALL OF US JUST TRYING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER. WE DON'T DESERVE THAT! And honestly, is that really what you want, shooter? Are you really that mad, sad or hurt, that you don't care who you kill? Whose life is taken or destroyed? Would you want someone to give up on your kids? I'm asking as nicely as possible, can you PLEASE STOP. For everyone else, we are raising a cash reward for anyone who can make this stop or provide info that leads to their arrest. We're tired of being scared. Someone asked me today if we were going to still show up on Monday. You're damn right we are! Like we do everyday. We have to stand up for these kids y'all. Because we see what happens and who they can become if we don't! Spread the word. Tell a friend. We're done with this!

Before anyone says it or thinks it, this had nothing to do with gang violence. It had everything to do with a young person driving down the street on a Sunday afternoon on his way to a friend's bday party, living his life! He stopped at a red light and was caught in a crossfire. This could've easily been any of us. How many of us don't stop at red lights because we're afraid of being shot? None of us. I know they're saying Chicago is safer, but this is just one of two young people, killed the exact same way, within days of each other. This mom has to bury her son. We can't make that easier. But we can help with the part that can alleviate a little bit of the stress. Thank you all in advance!

Yup. Today was report card day and everybody got a dollar for every A they had and ONE young lady had straight A's. She got the maximum amount! I was also able to chat with the kids who may need a little extra help in certain subjects about hooking them up with tutors, so next time they're A listers too!
First day back after the break. I popped out with my scarf on, my fancy in the house Kris Bryant t-shirt circa 2017, some furry crocs and ashy unsocked ankles. Why am I telling you this? Because no matter who makes what go boom and no matter what this guy deprives our community of, WE, not just me by myself, but the birthday girl, Auntie Big Cousin Phyllis, my girl Juan Juan aka Sonya, Mr. Kelly Jermaine, are still going to be here every single day. Because, if none of us got bombed, kidnapped or unlawfully detained in a foreign country by a mad king, there's really no reason not to be. The hood needs us and you too. See y'all tomorrow! #Resist

Hanukkah is a holiday dedicated to remembering Jewish warriors ending those who tried to end them. Maybe that hits different when you're Black and Jewish, because no matter what happens, how good, bad or ugly, I'm going to fight. And I don't care who it is that I have to fight. Because if the threat wasn't constant, the remider wouldn't have to be. Latkes are delicious. But this holiday is about so much more than the recipes. This holiday tells us how we survived once and then we did it over and over again! For me, this isn't just about the Maccabees. It's about Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey, Patrice Lumumba, Fannie Lou Hamer, Fred Hampton and all of the others who have taught me my circumstances as a Black woman and a Jew in this world calls for me to be more fierce than fearful! Chag Sameach y'all! We may forget who we really are at times. Thank G-d for the eight days that help us remember!
