Since Monday we've served over 800 meals and we're adding breakfast and weekend holdovers next week. While this situation has been at best, challenging, it's also had some moments that renewed my faith in people. Right now, everyone is mad, sad or afraid. There is a shortage of hope and compassion. These are dark times. I'm not saying there haven't been darker times, because of course there have been, I didn't live through them though. But, I'm here now and things are happening in this country whether we like them or not. And I'm so glad that the people around the block and in this new community we seem to be building aren't letting the negativity that's around them get into them. The volunteers have shown up everyday, because they believe, no matter what, our presence is needed because it makes a difference. Donors have looked at what we're doing and said they can support the idea of making sure our kids aren't forgotten at this time. Regular people who aren't volunteers or donors have smiled and told us that they're happy we're here. That in itself has a different kind of value. I know y'all may be tired of hearing me say this, but I have to. So when the time comes that you may need a little help, you know someone is there. We are all in this together. And my survival ultimately depends on yours and vice versa. This man has his very own Bible, but he doesn't know a thing about the way the Most High works. There's a psalm that I love that speaks to me now. If my bed is made in a world of peace, G-d is there with me and even if I make my bed in a house in full of overdue bills, and food from a pantry, G-d is there with me, too. This week has proven to me that as long as we are with each other, G-d is, too. Back at it on Monday. See y'all there!😘

This morning I saw another restaurant offering free meals to people who didn't receive their SNAP benefits. It was great and their chicken looked delish! However, once again, they were serving cooked food while children were still in school. That's not what we're doing. We understand that there are hungry adults, too. But, they have options. Five year olds don't. Either someone cooks for them, or they, a nine year old, a twelve year or fourteen year old figures it out for themselves. And then they make the news and we're all criminals because they robbed someone or stole from a store, just to eat. We're focusing on who no one else is. The kids. So, you can eat if you come to the block. But, not before any kid. I know that sounds harsh, but if you're paying attention, it's not nearly the most abrasive thing you've heard all day.

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this project! In all my years of hands-on research, I’ve learned that food is one of the most effective ways to combat violence. Feeding people and caring for them rebuilds our sense of community, and community is the foundation of safety. We’re looking for people who live near CPS schools or in neighborhoods struggling with food insecurity. Our goal is to empower local cooks, "Tiny Kitchen Cooks", to feed kids who are least likely to sit down to a hot meal at dinner. But this isn’t something we can do alone. We’ll also be relying on people across the city to help us identify where these kids are, so we can match them with nearby Tiny Kitchen Cooks who can step in with care, nourishment, and consistency. This work takes groceries, supplies, and resources, and that’s where you come in. Your donation directly puts food on the table for a child who might otherwise go without. Every dollar helps us keep kitchens cooking, kids fed, and communities safer. I know this is a huge undertaking. But saving a city and strengthening our communities has never been easy. Still, if we do it together, we can prove that love and a plate of food can be the most powerful tools for change.
