👏 Canada 👏 Post 👏 is 👏 a 👏 public 👏 service 👏

Nothing proves how capitalism has brain rotted everyone than thinking the post office, hospitals, public transit, libraries, etc. need to turn a profit to be worthwhile.

- Increases and prolongs reliance on fossil (so next crisis hurts even more)

- Often doesn't pass through to consumers (fossil co's just pocket it)

- Benefits enjoyed more by the rich (who drive bigger cars longer distances)

- Decreases gov't revenue so you end up paying for it in different ways

As we await Hungary's election both for the liberation of its people and as portent for our own, let us recall the role that ridicule, resistance and refusal has played. Yes, elections can be turning points but only if movements make them so.

Who else has been watching the #Hungary election? Russia, Trump/Vance/GOP & far right parties across Europe want to see Orban re-elected, while all indications are the Hungarian people want Orban and his party out.

I switch between hopeful and concerned about what the far right backlash will be 🙏

So, @mcnallyrobinson.com in Winnipeg are one of my true ‘home bookstores’ and they now offer free shipping anywhere in Canada for orders of $50 and up. I just placed another order and thought I’d alert others they can do this. They’re great. I sign there with every book release.

Happy reading.

Why is Winnipeg so resistant to change? YouTube video by CBC News Manitoba

Totally on point.
I love this city to death, but we're forever stuck. And with the upcoming election, I have a feeling that we'll stay that way.

This whole thread is thought-provoking but this post in particular is why we should talk early and often with students about gAI tools, and what we think of use (and not using) so that they are not left to assume what we are doing.

Yes! That's why with my grad students, in our biweekly meetings, we share & review messy first and second drafts for group feedback. They see that every publication is the result of a lot of cycles of work, so they don't judge themselves as much. And they gain skills in editing & giving feedback.

Canada Has Lost An Icon: A Reflection On Stephen Lewis The former Ontario NDP leader and human rights champion might have been one of a kind, but that shouldn't stop any of us from striving to be more like him.

Happy Transgender Day of Visibility to all of you who found the way to live your truth! In many places, living openly as yourself is dangerous, so also all the love to those for whom visibility isn't safe. 🏳️‍⚧️❤️ #TDOV

I welcome a new approach to organizing too for the #NDP, one of consistently showing solidarity in our communities.

I look forward to what's next. Ignore all the posturing and punditry of the next few days, that will, as they always have, try to undermine the left. Our movement matters 🧡

I think Canada desperately needs a strong voice on climate change - a crisis which continues even if we look away from it - as well as a party that isn't afraid to talk about public ownership for our collective goods. The federal #NDP doesn't shy away from that. 3/4

making important differences in people's lives.

Dental care, for example, was a central plank of the #NDP for decades; now partially implemented thanks to the NDP's pressure in the last minority Parliament, it is an incredibly successful program, filling *huge* unmet health care needs.

I am thrilled the federal #NDP leadership campaign is over, so we can rebuild. I think Canada is stronger when the federal NDP is. We often talk about universal health care, which is such an important contribution our party made to Canada. This continues into the present, 1/4

To be expected. Nenshi is not an NDPer & he perceives this as benefiting him provincially.

He had to get Alberta NDP to break their rules re: membership so he could run in the election. He is not of the left and this is not his party.

I think we need to have a conversation about the media’s willingness to lower its bar based on the most extreme shit a politician says, and how it results in the normalization of some pretty heinous stuff.

The reaction to Poilievre’s interview on Joe Rogan is an excellent example.

Let’s discuss:
