I think our postdoc position is a really special opportunity for someone who wants public engagement with science to be part of their professional identity. Help spread the word!
We interpret public engagement with science broadly, to include science communication, informal and formal science education, public participation in scientific research, science policy, and more.
We invite applications from those with a recent PhD in any academic discipline with an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and demonstrated experience in one or another aspect of public engagement with science.
The postdoc spends part of their time supporting the Center’s operations and growth, and also allows the postdoc to pursue initiatives related to public engagement with science, and their own professional goals in research and/or outreach.
If you know a public engagement with science'y academic looking for a postdoc next year (August 2026 start), @ucpews.bsky.social Center for Public Engagement with Science is hiring! #philsky #SciComm #STS #SocSky #HPS #SciEd jobs.uc.edu/job/Postdoct...
4/4. The AAPT workshop/conference is one of my favorite to attend. It is an amazing, supportive community, and I always learn SO MUCH from attending and hearing about different teaching techniques to use in philosophy. I highly recommend!!!
3/4 The 2nd is a BRAND NEW Early-Career Symposium Session that aims to bring together grad/early career instructors who have more teaching experience to think/present on a current teaching challenge or aspiration for improving or expanding your teaching! CFA: philosophyteachers.org/aapt-early-c...
2/4 The 1st is the amazing Seminar on Teaching and Learning in Philosophy which offers pedagogical training in teaching philosophy. This takes place during the mornings of the conference. Perfect if you are new to TAing/teaching! CFA: philosophyteachers.org/cfa-seminar-...
1/4 Have you have always wanted to go to the @theaapt.bsky.social workshop/conference, but didn't think you had something to submit for a session? WELL! This year, The American Association of Philosophy Teachers has 2 amazing opportunities for grad students and early career faculty!
Yet another act of anticipatory obedience.
The '27 budget is a *request* from the president. Congress can appropriate more $ to NSF (including SBE) if it wants.
In fact... a bipartisan majority JUST rebuked POTUS' deep cuts to science funding a couple months ago!
This is only over if we let it.
This is a cataclysm for social science in the United States. SBE helped to foster the field of Science and Technology Studies in the country (it supported the development of #STS training programs at UCSD and my alma mater, Cornell, in the 1990s).
Unfortunately, Vannevar Bush would love this part.
I am shocked to see this language from the NSF.
“The U.S. National Science Foundation's Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request reflects a strategic alignment of resources in a constrained fiscal environment while eliminating woke and weaponized grant programs that previously funded radical DEI projects.”

Nearly all collaborator challenges I have had stem from some diverging norm about academic work, methods, or personal individual process/work habits. And this compact forces that conversation. I swear by ‘em. I think I have a list of questions that make up the compact. Email me if curious to see it!
Just like I try to do “compacts” — a collection of norm setting for collaboration questions we talk about — with my student workers, I’m also moving towards this with peers/other faculty collaborators.
Physicists will spend $10 billion on a particle accelerator to understand why there is an "unnatural" hierarchy between the Planck scale and the weak scale, then insist that philosophy has no role and we should shut up and calculate.

Did you know Bluesky's founder has an #STS degree? In a new article, Erin Burkett and I explain why, despite current threats to humanities and social science, "STEM-in-Society programs" like STS are more important than ever. And we guide funders and university leaders how to better support them.
Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.
I believe one of the new mRNA vaccines was expected to treat colon cancer, and another had the potential to keep pancreatic cancer from recurring. That’s what they’re taking away.
