America Was Never Meant to Think too Hard He is in the fifth grade when they stop asking him to read full books.

Democracy dies w/o critical thinking - and it gets buried early.

A large majority of our schools...still...value compliance over critical thinking...still...

I suspect this structural disrespect for thinking in the U.S. has fluctuated depending upon how authoritarian leaders are. NOW, tho, WHEW!

Opinion: Possible changes to Alberta’s electoral map put democracy at risk If the UCP fiddles with the map, it could guarantee a conservative supermajority for a generation

Alberta's 17th Premier @rachelnotley.bsky.social published an excellent op-ed in the Globe and Mail about how the UCP is putting democracy at risk with their attempt to rig the election.

It is well worth the read:

Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura at the Enterprise communications station for the first time.

According to Gooding, she was not aware the character she was auditioning for was Uhura: "Honestly, I don't know if I would have booked it if I knew, because I would have probably over-committed to an Uhura we already know. I would have done the smart actor thing and studied the character, but I would have had a difficult time knowing her future and leaving her outside of the audition space – because Uhura, as a character, doesn't know what her future looks like. It was genius, to sort of hoodwink me a little bit. It was for the benefit of everyone involved that I didn't know. I would have probably gotten a little too into it and hindered myself from being able to share with the showrunners what I could bring to this role."

This painting depicts a dramatic aerial combat scene involving World War I biplanes. The aircraft in the foreground, adorned with roundels, appears to be an Allied plane, likely British or French, engaging with red-painted German triplanes, which are characteristic of the famous Flying Circus led by Manfred von Richthofen, also known as the Red Baron. The sky is filled with clouds, adding to the dynamic and intense atmosphere of the scene. The landscape below shows a battlefield, indicating the setting is over the Western Front during the war.

Brown had to enter a steep dive to get into the battle, and then climb quickly before hitting the ground. As he descended he shot at The Red Baron, who turned to avoid the attack and then started pursuing May once again over the trenches.

Behind Trump’s Public Bravado on the War, He Grapples With His Own Fears The president’s impulsive style has never been tested in a sustained military conflict, and he’s been ruminating on Jimmy Carter’s failure in Iran.

Very normal stuff.

"Aides kept the president out of the room as they got minute-by-minute updates because they believed his impatience wouldn’t be helpful...

"At one point Trump mused he should award himself the nation’s highest military honor, the Medal of Honor...

" #YouthClimateCorps is a pretty simple concept: invite young people to sign up for 2 years, get trained up & employed in the skills needed to tackle this task of our lives. The support or the polling support for this was super strong across every demographic, province, age, gender & income level."

This Data Center Is Getting a $77 Million Tax Break to Create One Job No other project in the country has gotten such a large subsidy to create so few jobs, according to watchdogs.

A New Jersey data center will reportedly receive $77 million in tax breaks — while only creating one permanent job.

One job, in exchange for higher utility bills, noise pollution, and potential groundwater pollution.

Is it any wonder communities are organizing to stop data centers?
