A photo of A Third Commonness by Robert Hass
A description by Robert Hass:
“When I set out to gather work from various prose projects, mostly undertaken in the last decade, I was surprised to see the range of it. . . . Thinking about American poetry, I remembered some lines by Wallace Stevens about the Connecticut River. He called it ‘a third commonness with light and air.’ Also ‘a curriculum’ and ‘an unnamed flowing,’ so it’s clear that he was also conceiving of poetry as this third commonness, which gave me a title for this gathering.”
Forthcoming May 5: A THIRD COMMONNESS: ESSAYS ON POETRY, POETICS, AND THE NATURAL WORLD by former U.S. Poet Laureate ROBERT HASS.
Today, HASS gives us a first look at his sprawling exploration of poetic heritage and the inspired lines by Wallace Steven that gave this collection its name.
