NASA and Mamdani are proving that Americans are desperate to see their money spent in ways they feel good about.
This, however, is not the same thing as simply spending the money on things we would feel good about but never know happened. People need to be able to see it.

two star letterboxd review that reads "this film is transformers for gays but somehow also neon genesis evangelion for straight ppl at the same time"
the top review for pacific rim on letterboxd is maybe the most scathing venom I've ever seen in a movie review. Like it's not even really wrong but what the hell did guillermo del toro ever do to you
$600 to replace two springs on a garage door ok sure buddy, oh wait looks like you didn't fix this one it still won't open. oh you did install a spring, it didn't work, so you want us to just pay the $600 for it and then $4500 to replace the whole door, throwing away the spring we just bought? Die
Japanese has words for extremely hot days. Now, the Meteorological Agency has announced a new one - 酷暑日 (kokushobi) for days 40C (104F) or greater. One jokester said it should have gone with 汗日暑日暑 (asebishobisho, "sweat-soaked day") instead.
Yeah no it's cool I'll call you six times to get any information at all yeah sure just leave without telling anyone so I have to realize and then go see if you did what we hired you for oh you only fixed 3 of the 4 doors but you still want us to pay for all 4? I am going to kill you with my mind
having to deal directly with vendors and contractors at my job make me almost want to sympathize with my bosses because damn it really is it difficult to maintain respect for some of these people.
Our team received a report of intermittent app outages at about 11:40pm PDT on April 15, 2026. They worked through the night to mitigate a sophisticated Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, which intensified throughout the day.
cashapp just sent me $10 in bitcoin???
So awesome that when I look at job boards it's all either deceptively advertised commission-based sales jobs that will make you want to kill yourself or it's $11/hr.
every job a business cuts thanks to technology should turn into taxes that business pays towards a Universal Basic Income fund for anyone who wants to apply for it (up to a certain income level like 100k/yr or something)
Whether AI really can do this or not, we need to move to a system where new tech replacing menial labour is a good thing for the working class. (Fully automated luxury communism)
did my taxes yesterday and haha my take home pay for all of 2025 was about 25k lmao I'm never going to be able to afford to survive on my own in this economy I will be working in my 80s hoping I can get some of my debt paid down before I die
So much of DS9 is deliberately lit with far more contrast and dark shadows than TNG and it's very clear that those blacks are being crushed into a fuzzy dark grey. I'd love to see the colors of this show really pop but I don't think any remaster based on 30yo videotape masters will pull it off.
This isn't a "standard def/DVD sucks" thing because SD video can look really good; this is just really bad SD video. More than the detail is the color - looking at comparisons of the TNG SD and HD masters, the most shocking thing is just how muddy and dull the old colors are.
A screenshot of DS9 Season 2 Episode 9 "Second Sight", Dax and Sisko are in the background of the shot.
The same screenshot cropped in to show the lack of detail in either's face.
Ive been really enjoying watching through DS9 but it is a little sad sometimes to think this is the best this show will probably ever look because at this point if Paramount ever decided to remaster it (they won't) then it will be some terrible "4K AI Upscale" identical to the ones already out there
You love to see it
But since I've invested none of my own money into this, I'm just sort of. Unimpressed and disappointed? Oh, that expensive toy that's sorta fun broke immediately and permanently? Yeah that reminds me of getting styrofoam RC helicopters every xmas and they never survived the first contact with a wall
If I had bought this $500 RC car with my own money and then spend like two hours replacing some of the very delicate precision engineered parts to make it even better and then the first time it hit a curb the entire chassis was permanently bent and the car was destroyed I would be incredibly angry.
I am doing my best to act interested because it's been one of his hobbies for decades but maaaan the more I am exposed to it the more I'm like "this seems like way too much work and investment to drive a toy car around an empty parking lot every now and then"
I'm relieved because this means I don't have to take it home with me where I have absolutely no space for it. It's just been sitting on top of the bag I take to my dad's because where the hell do I put a huge RC car and all its accessories
Chassis bent, several differential pieces shattered, basically unrepairable and even if repaired will never drive correctly again. Several hundred dollars of parts at minimum. So that's the RC car hobby I guess? You buy an expensive car and then spend more fixing it when it breaks all the time?
My dad insisted I bring over the RC car he got me a few months ago and he spent a good couple of hours replacing some gear on the motor to make it run faster or something. We took it outside and I was able to drive it around for about 10 minutes before I hit a curb and completely destroyed the car.
When I've got my pop culture analyst hat on, my job is to be as open, curious and articulate about my subject as possible.
The two ways I get better at that are being open to new experiences and reading my peers.
I learn something, and find something new, from every single issue of BW/DR.
okay I am at the point where I might think the #DS9 intro is better than the TNG intro. I'm humming this shit all the time.

my favorite windows 11 failure mode is when you wake up a machine and the lock screen fails to render fully so you're just staring at a lock screen wallpaper hitting keys as nothing happens. softlocked out of your own desktop, thanks Microsoft!
