I will not be at the conference, not because I don't want to, but because #atproto has been deprioritized and #NoKings is the same weekend, which is far more important to me today.
I hope you all have a great time and find ways to build back better without bluesky. I will watch from the sidelines
I'm signing off of @bsky.app
1. Microblogging is the fertile soil upon which anxiety and toxicity grow. My mental health is more important.
2. At the first #AtmosphereConf, it was said that for @atproto.com to succeed, Bluesky must fail. I agree with this more today than ever. #BainCapital
A better repo is github.com/verdverm/tes... that uses less of my personal tooling. FYI, I'm taking a break from @atproto.com for the foreseeable future, re: if any support is needed.

The void bot in the announcement image is exactly the kind of bot I don't want anywhere near my feed. I went to one of their meetups, the things I heard people say during conversations (with their bots and myself), left me with real concern.
Sherry Turkle is a name you want to know
We had a new rule for ai-bot contributions on HN, they are now against the rules in comments. Generally any automated posting is against the rules.
The announcement had a very robust discussion with many viewpoints.

Users choice is why. If someone only wants to see non-bot posts, why is that a problem?
If they are already labelled, why put the burden on the community to duplicate that effort?

Can we get a switch in moderation settings for them? Like we do for adult content?

World Happiness Report 2026, the social media edition
The way they approached the call for papers is really intriguing, start with the hypothesis you'd expect and then as for more expanding and challenging the ideas.
Nuance has been surfaced.

It should reduce the compute (mainly disk) for hosting a read-only mirror significantly
I have ~85M+ operations, need to run my spam report generator.
Can you remind me where we can submit proposals for something that might deal with this?
My first pass thought is that the main PLC keeps accepting them and read-only can flip a switch to use well known / agreed upon filters.
Would calling it a "hold my beer" attitude be more accurate?

at my account level, so that I don't have to do it for everyone of them individually
If I may add one personally, I'd like to override the background to something plain and neutral. The noisy backgrounds some authors choose is too distracting for reading online
My rough calculation for "accounts" and their "status" as of ~2026-03-11 (it takes many hours to fill, so some slippage expected)
Rough counts (empty is have a valid account, ignore "Active")
This is based on calling the getStatus endpoint for every account returned by the PDS, list from Mary.
FYI the active field on the list endpoint is not the same as active in the getStatus endpoint, which gives you more details
jetstream cannot do a full backfill, for that you have to go to the PDS
You can get a list of all accounts there, but the status is inconsistent, so you further need to getStatus for all accounts, which has the bonus that it includes their collection list and other usefuls
the numbers aren't good, so management picks the feel good one that is not reproducible

That's before accounting for takedown and deleted, which as you have noticed, brings the number way way down
Third nit, this is on official copy
My first nit on this is that "account" != "user"
Consider all the spam accounts that get taken down and how many many of us in the atmo have created. Many "users" with multiple "accounts"
My second nit is that I always come up several million short using the same code / pds endpoint (not tap)
I have code / steps in here to reproduce various account metrics locally. Easy to add custom sql files and jupyter notebooks for further analysis

I think my lite backfill is done enough to do second count

The account you asked or were "talking" to is not Kenneth Pollack's account (if he even has one here)
