This member got behind on monthly payments and has that large outstanding balance due. They were in a payment plan and slowly paying it off, but couldn’t keep up when the cold winter hit. Their monthly bill was over $300/month. Now they’re back to trying to pay it off.
A national grid bill with identifying info removed. The bill has an over $4000 balance. This NYCC member had a payment plan they were on and keeping pace with. Then the cold winter and rising gas bills were too much. Their monthly bill at that point was over $300. They couldn’t keep up and fell behind again.
One of our member’s over $4,000 gas bill for her small 1 family home in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. 😰
As our members struggle to pay rising energy bills, @governor.ny.gov Hochul pushes to *make it worse* by gutting NY’s climate law, locking us to oil & gas.
The legislature should tell her: NO! 🧵
We want $10 million in the New York City budget to subsidize heat pumps for homeowners, and requirements that end new oil and gas boiler installations — this means cleaner air, more green jobs, and lower utility bills for New Yorkers! 2/2
🌍 On Friday, 4/17, @nypirg.bsky.social, @fwwnewyork.bsky.social, and @nychange.bsky.social delivered nearly 5,000 petition signatures to the Mayor's Office of Climate and Environmental Justice and Office of Mass Engagement in support of our #GasFreeNYC campaign! 1/2
Great, and grateful to Amsterdam News, to see this profile of James Inniss—someone people rarely hear about but who is doing a disproportionate amount of the work to organize NYC's organized Left in both electoral and governance work. He's not on here, but do follow his org: @nychange.bsky.social.

James Inniss boasts his own remarkable come-up as New York Communities for Change’'s (NYCC) current interim political director. His formative years played a big role in unofficially laying the groundwork for his organizing ways. Read more here: https://bit.ly/4sALEX6
We love seeing an organizer get their flowers, especially someone as kind & effective as @nychange.bsky.social’s James Inniss!
Here’s a memo on what’s happening. Call your state legislators and tell them to say NO to Hochul’s attack on NY’s climate law:

Maybe Governor Hochul shouldn’t keep NYers locked to oil & gas by gutting the state’s climate law? 🤔
We held our first organizing meeting in Wakefield in the Bronx yesterday for #GasFreeNYC:
✅ lower energy bills
✅ good, union jobs
✅ less pollution

Guess which Governor is all in to keep us hooked on oil & gas by gutting the state’s climate law?
Today nearly 100 parents, providers, and allies showed up and showed out in the Bronx as we all rallied outside Speaker Heastie’s office, demanding a $500M Worker Retention Fund for our childcare providers!
Our educators and workforce deserve livable wages NOW!!
The Defend Our Climate Law Emergency Rally is taking place now in the Legislative Office Building in Albany!

Our members are making calls to their legislators from the rally bus to Albany to stop Hochul’s attack on the climate law.
NYCC has generated almost 1,000 calls so far from constituents to assemblymembers: don’t raise our utility bills! Stop Hochul’s attack on the climate law! 🧵
Join Wednesday’s protest in Albany!
We’ve heard some minimize Hochul’s attack on NY’s climate law as just sort of mild change.
NO.
She wants to cripple the law.
If the legislature doesn’t stop her attack, our members will pay much higher bills, and pollution will skyrocket, too.

@volts.wtf & @petesikora.bsky.social of @nychange.bsky.social about Hochul & CLCPA:
Sikora: "If...you agree that the [NY] climate law should not be rolled back, pick up the phone right now, call a state legislator that represents you and tell them to reject Hochul’s proposals."
Great interview!
Today on Volts: NY governor Kathy Hochul wants to delay or roll back her state's landmark climate law in the name of affordability. State activists say more clean energy would bring costs down & Hochul is just making excuses for her past failures. I get into it with one of those activists.
Honored to have joined @mayor.nyc.gov, council members, and movement partners for the announcement of the new Office of Community Safety today, following the release of our policy proposal for the city to invest $26-30 million in non-carceral hate violence prevention.
@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social announces first-ever Deputy Mayor for the Department of Community Safety, Renita François!
We need real change to take on NYC's mental health crisis and ending the cycle that fuels the broken carcel system. This is a great first step!
Protesters on Wall Street with large sign Kathy Hochul don’t gut NYS climate law
Governor Hochul went to yet another fancy corporate lobbyist event at Cipriani Wall Street today.
We and others were outside to say:
Don’t gut the climate law! The utility bills are too damn high! Don’t raise our bills, Gov!

Senators Liz Krueger, @senatorkevinparker.bsky.social @senatorharckham.bsky.social roast Hochul’s attack on NY’s climate law, pointing out GAS drives up bills, so rolling back the law would *raise* utility bills! They rightly compare this attack to Trump. 🔥
