Antarctic minerals in a warming world Nature Climate Change - Climate change will expose new ice-free areas of Antarctica. Now a study explores how climate change might spur the first ‘gold rush’ on the unexploited continent.

News and Views @natclimate.nature.com from @anthonypress.bsky.social: "The use of climate modelling by Lucas et al. to predict the future presence and extent of Antarctic ice-free areas is novel, and indeed very useful." But what does it mean for mineral exploitation?

Russia's interest in Antarctic oil exposed after scientist's arrest A document linked to the arrest of a scientist has raised questions about whether Russia has long-term ambitions to exploit oil resources in Antarctica, where mining is banned indefinitely.

Antarctic Geopolitics: Russia’s arrest of Ukrainian Antarctic Scientist directly linked to its ambition to mine in Antarctica. I’ve seen the prosecution document: it’s outrageous.

First locally born Tasmanian governor, Guy Green, dies aged 87 Colleagues and friends remember a thoughtful man of the law, champion of the Antarctic and "one of the funniest men".

RIP Sir Guy Green. Sir Guy (he preferred just Guy) was a passionate champion of Antarctica and of the Antarctic Treaty System. As Governor of Tasmania he developed and promoted the Governor’s Forum on Antarctica. I will miss him as a wonderful colleague.

Antarctic Reporting: While there is some good coverage of #Antarctic issues in this report, there are two errors: 1. The Antarctic Treaty does “strike down” Antarctic territorial claims (read its Article 4 for clarity). —>
